The method used with Block-Cut has been employed to reduce material waste by roofers in Australia and New Zealand for a very long time. What is exciting about this announcement is that the capability is now automated, interactive and embedded in the Roof Wizard software, so just about anyone can learn how to do it reliably and accurately. An added bonus is that all the required installer reports are generated automatically to user defined templates with your company details.

Block-Cut is a new process where the estimator determines where panels/sheets can go and more particularly, where the offcuts can go, as part of a “block” of panels, thus substantially reducing waste material. It takes the blocks created and sub-divides them to show where the off-cut is expected to be extracted from and applied to the roof.

This is actually taking what roofers do manually, automating it and completing it so quickly that various options may be explored to achieve the best fit. Those roofers who reduce waste by flipping sheets around on hip ends will take to this immediately. It shows them exactly how to achieve the best fit. This is done in the office, before getting to the job site.

The multi-coloured panel placement drawing is sent to the job with the material, and the installation team can see at a glance where every single piece and offcut piece must be placed by colour and section placement code; panel area B1 goes to roof plane area B1, B5 goes to roof plane area B5 etc. This achieves the optimal use of material that might otherwise be offcut waste—almost zero waste in this typical example.

Instead of the average job waste allowance being 10 to 12 percent, you can easily get it to 2 to 5 percent. This can go directly to your bottom line without major retraining and changes to your usual practices. Boral Roofing unveiled its latest offerings in its Cool Roof portfolio during the recent International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas.

The two Cool Roof colors making their debut at IBS 2014 are the Saxony 900 Slate Charcoal Blend and the Madera 900 Tahoe Blend, both of which are included in the Boral Concrete Roof Tile product line. These new colors have been designed to accommodate the updated California Code of Regulations, Title 24, Part 6. A major revision of the energy code involves new prescriptive Cool Roof requirements in select climate zones for low-rise residential steep-slope roofs. The change has resulted in a sizable increase in the aged Solar Reflective Index (SRI) for all roofing materials: from 10 to 16 or greater.

The new additions to Boral Roofing’s color portfolio ensure that Cool Roof requirements are met without sacrificing beauty or performance. Larson Electronics has released a new 3000 watt extendable light mast. This mast is equipped with two 1,500 watt metal halide lamps that produce 300,000 lumens of light combined.

The LM-16-FM-2X1500W-EW Light Tower from Larson Electronics is a 16-foot extendable light tower equipped with an electric winch and two metal halide light fixtures that produce approximately 150,000 lumens each. The two 1,500 watt metal halide lamps produce a wide spread of intense white light, allowing this unit to effectively cover large work areas with high quality illumination. These lamps have 19 reflectors and are constructed of aluminum with a clear tempered glass lens which is secured into place with a heavy duty gasket and single ring lock. These floodlights produce a wide flood light pattern capable of illuminating approximately 3.5 acres. Each floodlight is securely fastened to the light boom and each lamp includes a support bracket to help maintain lamp stability within it housing.

This two section light boom can be extended to 16 feet for maximum area coverage and collapsed to 9 feet. The tower is constructed of square steel tubing. The mast is extended to its full height using an included 1,000 pound rated 120 volt Dutton Lainson electric winch with 3/16 inch aircraft cable. The electric winches are controlled by a programmable logic relay and reflective sensors as opposed to physical limit switches for ease of use and safety.

These light masts are typically mounted to trailers or other stable surfaces via a 15 inch by 13 inch, 1Ž2 inch thick mounting base plate which has been drilled to accept six 3Ž4 inch anchor bolts. A 24 inch wide and 1Ž4 inch thick mounting plate is attached to the upper section of the mast which provides a strong and stable platform for the metal halide fixtures. This light tower can withstand winds up to 125 mph when lowered to 9.6 feet.

ACRYLUME E PLUS offers the environmentally conscious metal building construction industry a chromium-free emissive acrylic coating on GALVALUME Coated Steel Sheet, which is designed to meet challenging solar reflectance and thermal emittance regulations. Prior to the introduction of this product, the emissivity requirements could only be met through pre-painted GALVALUME products. ACRYLUME E PLUS also meets numerous European Union environmental directives including Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances (REACH).

To address these changing standards, Garland has engineered a new product line of high-performance solutions that prevent unwanted air, vapor and water from penetrating the building envelope. The Garland Aero-Block product line offers solutions for all six sides of the building enclosure, as well as for gaps in walls or between sections of walls.

This new polymer-modified-asphalt technology is available in three formats. The fluid-applied solvent-based polymer and fluid-applied water-based polymer versions can be applied by brush, spray or roller. There is also a pre-fabricated, self-adhering multi-layer membrane. The entire Aero-Block family create vapor-closed protection, meeting the requirements for a Class I air/vapor barrier.
