Roof Windows Are Operated By Hand

VELUX's GDL CABRIO roof window

VELUX’s GDL CABRIO roof window

Roof windows and skylights share common elements, including glass, wood frames, sashes and aluminum. But skylights are designed for out-of-reach applications and can be automated while roof windows are within reach and are operated by hand.

Roof windows utilize a ventilation flap that allows fresh air circulation even while the unit is closed. Roof window sashes also rotate inward for easy cleaning from the inside.

VELUX produces two types of roof windows: the deck mount GPL Top hinged model which opens to a 45-degree angle to satisfy current requirements for emergency escape and rescue, while admitting natural light and passive ventilation, and the deck mount GDL CABRIO roof window which utilizes a dual-sash operation that allows the top to open upward to 45 degrees for ventilation and the bottom to open outward to create a roof balcony. The design makes the CABRIO a “fresh air” alternative to a dormer and it can also provide emergency escape and rescue capabilities.

Both models can be fitted with blinds and screens and provide decorative flair in addition to their functional features.

New Roofing Ventilation Products

CertainTeed Intake Vent

CertainTeed Intake Vent

Strengthening its position as a one-stop-shop for complete roof solutions, CertainTeed announces the introduction of seven new roofing ventilation products. Part of the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System, the new product line includes CertainTeed Ridge Vent, CertainTeed Rolled Ridge Vent and CertainTeed Intake Vent.

CertainTeed Ridge Vent is available in 7, 9 and 12 inches with filtered and unfiltered options. Each ridge vent is made of high quality co-polymer to remain sturdy, nailable and flexible. Reinforced ribs provide greater stability and rigidity, imprinted slot guides ensure proper slot width, and nail holes and nail lines enable easy, mistake-free installation. The product line also includes a Class A fire-rated vent.

CertainTeed Rolled Ridge Vent, also available in filtered and unfiltered, is designed for use in roof pitches from 3/12 to 12/12. The product features a unique, virtually invisible profile that installs fast.

CertainTeed Intake Vent is easily installed on a shingled roof with or without overhangs, and can be used to supplement existing soffit or undereave vents. Internal baffles, drainage system and weather filter provide three levels of weather protection. The intake vent allows air to flow into the attic and helps prevent heat build-up and ice dams.

The new ventilation products feature proven, effective technology for shingle roofs in all climates and come with a lifetime limited warranty and five-year SureStart Protection.

The products are designed with an external baffle to deflect wind and weather over the vent, creating low pressure above the vent to pull air out of the attic. Each vent comes in a black finish to blend with a variety of shingle colors and create a clean, uncluttered roofline. All provide excellent weather protection and prevent premature deterioration of roofing materials by continuously moving air year-round to improve interior comfort.

Radiant Barrier Combines Energy Efficiency with Moisture Protection

Huber Engineered Woods has released its ZIP System radiant barrier.

Huber Engineered Woods has released its ZIP System radiant barrier.

The most recent innovation from Huber Engineered Woods combines superior strength and stiffness, moisture resistance, and now a radiant heat barrier. The new ZIP System radiant barrier incorporates the signature ZIP System technology with radiant heat protection.

ZIP System radiant barrier combines the energy-efficiency benefits of radiant barrier with the superior moisture protection and simple installation of ZIP System sheathing. The panels are now available for national distribution.

ZIP System radiant barrier panels block up to 97 percent of radiant heat transfer which can lower attic temperatures by as much as 30 degrees. The all-in-one sheathing allows for a faster, more efficient installation, providing an instant 180-day rough dry-in. Homeowners also can reap the benefits of ZIP System Radiant Barrier, as the roof panels reduce home cooling costs up to 12 percent.*

ZIP System radiant barrier roof panels are available in 1/2-, 5/8-, and 7/16-inch thicknesses. ZIP System roof panels eliminate the need for felt paper, resulting in a more efficient building process.

*All testing. Testing was done in accordance with ASTM standard and test methods. The Florida Solar Energy Center/University of Central Florida Publication #FSEC-EN-15-87 titled “Radiant Barriers: A Question & Answer Primer.” Studies represent cases in the Southeast and may not be representative of other regions. Savings also depend on the amount of heat the roof and attic contribute to a home’s cooling load.

Shake Roofing Is Maintenance-free

Inspire Roofing Products’ Arcella Shake

Inspire Roofing Products’ Arcella Shake

Inspire Roofing Products’ Arcella Shake is changing the concept of shake roof architecture. Carrying a limited lifetime warranty, it combines optimum fire protection with no maintenance ever being required.

The Inspire Arcella Shake Roofing System carries a Class A fire rating, meaning it’s tested in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories’ “severe” fire exposure testing. In comparison, much wood shake roofing carries no fire rating at all. Many municipalities prohibit wooden roofs because of inherent fire risk. For communities that require Class A roofing or that deal with arid conditions, high wind and the combustible fuel of crackly brush, Inspire’s composite engineering offers a complete solution. Inspire removes fuel from potential fires with protection that could mean the difference in a roof and home surviving flying embers versus succumbing to them in flames.

According the U.S.D.A.’s Forest Products Laboratory, failure from decay in natural wood shake can occur in less than 10 years. But with Inspire’s line of genuine cedar colors, homeowners capture the look and texture of gorgeous cedar for as long as they own their home.

Inspire Arcella Shake is available in four rich colors that characterize nature’s warmth. Aged Cedar, New Cedar, Cedar Brown and Weathered Grey deliver handsome charm to complete a home’s classic look. Within each genuine color selection, two or three delicate shade variations deliver both a unified color field and unique authenticity. By comparison, other manufacturers’ synthetic shake has variations that veer further from a main color, perpetuating a mottled roof and calling authenticity into question.

To enhance the natural, handcrafted look, Inspire features a mix of 10-, 7 1/2- and 5-inch shake widths. Each Arcella Shake color selection is factory-sorted to deliver the ideal, ready-made proportions of shake width and nuanced color. Underlying the shakes’ authentic beauty, Inspire’s Arcella Shake’s innovative mineral filled polyolefin composition handles beastly weather; fierce wind-driven rain, Class 4 hail impact, sea-spray and 110 mph winds. Durability combines with meticulous realism reflecting hand-split cedar wood. By exactly mirroring nature’s texture, Inspire Arcella Shake produces deep dimension, long wood grain striations and wondrous interplays of light and shadow. All the attraction of shake roofing is delivered with significantly lower investments in money and time.

Since it is virtually maintenance-free, Inspire relieves homeowners from chores that risk safety. They don’t have to get the ladder out and scale the roof to perform work at dangerous heights, or hire someone. Inspire’s impermeability and toughness deliver valuable protection for coastal homes, standing up to extreme storms and years of saltwater-laden gusts. Its InFlex cambered design means fasteners hold the shakes snugly to the roof. Locking tabs provide easy installation and also protect against wind-driven rain, preventing water penetration for a structurally-sound roof.

Inspire Arcella Shake’s durability also makes it the sustainable cedar alternative. There’s no forced reliance on chemical treatments that need to be repeated every several years for wood shakes that could themselves need replacement in less than 20 years.

Interlocking Clay Roof Tiles Have Large Format

Marley Eternit's Maxima and Melodie large-format interlocking clay roof tiles

Marley Eternit’s Maxima and Melodie large-format interlocking clay roof tiles

Marley Eternit has launched two large-format interlocking clay roof tiles, which offer the aesthetic qualities of clay, together with the time and cost-saving benefits of interlocking tiles. The new tiles—Maxima and Melodie—are available in Natural Red and can be used at low minimum pitches for greater design flexibility.

Maxima is an interlocking double roman clay tile, with an open gauge so that it can be easily fixed on the roof and doesn’t require any complicated fittings. The tile gives a high coverage rate of 10.1 tiles per square meter, saving installation time and cost.

The Melodie is an interlocking clay pantile which has a traditional appearance, but has one of the lowest minimum pitches in the roofing industry at 12.5 degrees. The robust design of the interlock allows the roof tile to go down to a very low pitch, but the tile also has a flexible gauge so that it can be fixed easily. This low pitch clay pantile gives designers and contractors greater flexibility and is ideal for refurbishments or new builds. The natural red Melodie has a covering capacity of 13.8 tiles per square meter at the maximum gauge and gives a traditional, classic pantile appearance.

Both tiles have been extensively tested for wind driven rain and can be used with Marley Eternit’s Universal accessories, that are not only completely dry fix but can be used to provide ventilation.

New Cool Roof Colors in Concrete Roof Tile Product Line

The Madera 900 Tahoe Blend, which is included in the Boral Concrete Roof Tile product line

The Madera 900 Tahoe Blend, which is included in the Boral Concrete Roof Tile product line

Boral Roofing unveiled its latest offerings in its Cool Roof portfolio during the recent International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas.

The two Cool Roof colors making their debut at IBS 2014 are the Saxony 900 Slate Charcoal Blend and the Madera 900 Tahoe Blend, both of which are included in the Boral Concrete Roof Tile product line. These new colors have been designed to accommodate the updated California Code of Regulations, Title 24, Part 6. A major revision of the energy code involves new prescriptive Cool Roof requirements in select climate zones for low-rise residential steep-slope roofs. The change has resulted in a sizable increase in the aged Solar Reflective Index (SRI) for all roofing materials: from 10 to 16 or greater.

The new additions to Boral Roofing’s color portfolio ensure that Cool Roof requirements are met without sacrificing beauty or performance. The Saxony 900 Slate Charcoal Blend, which comes from Boral Roofing’s manufacturing plant in Rialto, Calif., perfectly complements the inherent beauty in French and Tudor architectural styles. Saxony Slate emulates the distinctive appearance of natural slate, while delivering the advantages of concrete tile. The Madera 900 Tahoe Blend, which is manufactured in Boral Roofing’s plant in Gilroy, Calif., offers an authentic replication of a hand-split cedar shake roof that is flexible enough to complement any architectural style. The award-winning Madera 900 is the most affordable, authentic hand-split wood shake replacement product available with all the benefits of concrete tile.

Boral Roofing’s latest Cool Roof technology is also being showcased via a rooftop display that demonstrates the real-time thermal performance of Boral Tile compared to other roofing materials. According to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, an independent testing agency, a family in a typical single-family house could save up to 22 percent per year on heating and cooling costs compared to the standard asphalt shingle roof.* A single family house with a Boral Cool Roof System could save an average of $15 to $20 per month immediately compared to a standard asphalt shingle roof, and, as energy rates rise year over year, savings could increase up to $20,000 over 30 years.**

Boral Roofing is the first clay roof tile manufacturer in the world to receive the prestigious Cradle-to-Cradle Gold Certification for environmentally sustainable products. Boral Clay Roof Tiles have a recycled content of up to 59 percent and come in an array of rich, kiln-fired hues with unrivaled color retention. Boral Concrete Roof Tiles contain no chemical preservatives and are up to 100 percent recyclable.

*Steep-slope Assembly Testing of Clay and Concrete Tile with and without Cool Pigmented Colors, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 2005. Results vary based on profile of tile installed, location, weather and other factors.

**Results based on a 22 square roof in Southern California with no additional energy efficient upgrades during an average annual weather pattern, annual inflation rate of 3 percent, and annual energy cost increase of 3.5 percent. Savings may vary based on location, weather and other factors. Savings estimates are based on comparison to a similar size asphalt shingle roof.
