Upgraded Flashing Offers Longer UV Protection

TAMKO Building Products LLC offers the newly-upgraded TW-105 Flashing Membrane, which features white polymer surface film technology that gives the product increased UV resistance. According to the manufacturer, this new generation of TW-105 increases the UV resistance from the original 60 days to an extended length of 180 days.

“We’re always looking for ways to provide contractors with the products they need and these improvements offer TAMKO contractors more flexibility in their project timelines,” said Stephen McNally, TAMKO’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

TW-105 Flashing is a self-adhering SBS-modified bitumen membrane used for balcony and breezeway details in conjunction with TAMKO’s TW-60 Self-Adhering Waterproofing Membrane, TWM-1 Mastic, and either TWP-1 Adhesive Primer, TWP-2 Water-Based Adhesive Primer or TWP-LV1 Low VOC Adhesive Primer – all part of TAMKO’s waterproofing product line. Additionally, TW-105 Flashing may be installed at wall/floor intersections and other transition locations.

TW-105 Flashing is available in 12-inch by 40-foot rolls and each carton contains two 40-foot rolls for a total of 80 feet of length per carton. Lead-Free Roof Flashing Formally Approved by IAPMO UES

Boral Roofing LLC announces that Wakaflex, the company’s versatile flashing solution, is now listed through IAPMO UES as a permanent flashing (ER-579). The product earned the distinction by undergoing and passing an extremely rigorous 2,000-hour UV exposure test.

During testing, the product maintained its original performance properties, which include the adhesion of the butyl strips to various materials including concrete, clay, stone coated steel, polymer roofing, aluminum, galvanized steel, vinyl and wood structured panels. The approval also includes the use of Wakaflex as a permanent flashing for solar applications in California.

“Wakaflex is tough and durable, and its numerous applications and performance abilities make it ideally suited for use with virtually all roofing materials,” said Brian Sweet, components product manager with Boral Roofing. “This IAPMO UES listing is important as it clearly demonstrates the performance capabilities of the product to building officials and homeowners.”

Ideal for difficult and complex details, Wakaflex contains an internal aluminum mesh, making it extremely flexible and easy to shape and form to virtually any surface. Wakaflex chemically seals to itself and its Polyisobutylene material composition makes the flashing extremely resistant to all weather conditions.

The flashing may be used for step flashings, headwalls, pipe penetrations, pitch transitions, valley junctures, valley soakers, chimneys and skylights. It may also be used as a solution for solar panels, hip and ridge junctures, sidewalls, splayed gables, and various repair applications as well as for tricky details that require weather protection.

One highly notable product attribute is its lead-free composition. OSHA has declared that “lead adversely affects numerous body systems and causes forms of health impairment and disease which arise after periods of exposure as short as days or as long as several years.”

“Lead is still the most commonly used flashing material, and with so many ongoing safety concerns surrounding exposure to it, there is a legitimate need for alternative options,” added Sweet. “Any place that lead is used on a tile roof, Wakaflex works better and more safely.”

Wakaflex is offered in 22-pound 11” x 33” and 27-pound 22” x 16.5” rolls. The product is also certified by Miami Dade NOA 08-1106.03 for use in hurricane-prone regions of Florida, Hawaii and coastal Texas.

Water Seal Waterproofing Treatment for Use on Brick and Concrete

New Mortar Sentry Water Seal waterproofing treatment from Mule-Hide Products Co. produces a water-repellant surface on masonry and concrete, extending the service lives of chimneys, walls and other surfaces.

Mortar Sentry is designed for use on alkaline materials, including brick, mortar, concrete block, cultured stone, sandstone and concrete. It can be applied to horizontal and vertical surfaces. It is not recommended for use on non-silicate natural stone, such as limestone or dolomite.

Mortar Sentry penetrates below the surface of brick and concrete, chemically reacting with the alkalines and silicas there to create a barrier that locks moisture out while allowing trapped moisture to escape. In brick structures, this waterproofing reduces the movement cracks caused when bricks absorb moisture and expand. In concrete structures, it helps prevent the accelerated aging caused when trapped moisture freezes during the winter or is exposed to high summer temperatures.

The treatment also helps prevent the rusting of concrete reinforcement, protects against the growth of mold and mildew, and eliminates the primary cause of efflorescence – the white powder left on brick and concrete when trapped water evaporates and leaves behind deposits of dissolved salts.

Because Mortar Sentry saturates brick and masonry – rather than simply leaving a film on the surface – it does not wear away when exposed to the elements. The original color and texture of the surface are retained.

Mortar Sentry is easily applied using a low-pressure, garden-type sprayer or a brush or roller.

The line includes two formulas. Mortar Sentry Water Seal 10 is recommended for use on vertical surfaces. Mortar Sentry Water Seal 15 provides the additional durability that horizontal surfaces require.

Both Mortar Sentry products are packaged in 1-gallon jugs and 5-gallon pails.

Drain Mat Developed for Use in Balconies and Breezeways

TAMKO’s new TW-Drain 220TAMKO’s new TW-Drain 220 is a drain mat designed with core and fabric construction to help keep water out of residential, multifamily and light commercial projects. According to the company, the drain’s unique design allows for quick and simple installation in concrete waterproofing projects.

TW-Drain 220 may be used for above grade applications such as balcony/breezeways. TW-Drain 220’s dimpled drainage core and filter fabric help protect entry points from potential moisture penetration into buildings.

“With TAMKO’s TW-Drain 220, water flows through the dimpled core, rather than building up excess moisture within the concrete. This relieves hydrostatic pressure and leads to better protection for your project,” said Corporate Director of Waterproofing for TAMKO, Brandon Knobloch.
TW-Drain 220 comes in 50-foot rolls with a 4-foot width. TW-Drain 220 can be purchased now from TAMKO’s Columbus, Kansas manufacturing facility with nationwide availability. Mixed truckload orders may be placed with TAMKO’s extensive line of additional waterproofing products.
