Owens Corning Celebrates Contractors Who Advance the Industry

Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt LLC recognized the industry’s most distinguished professionals at its 2014 Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractor Celebration. This annual event celebrated the 18 Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractors who have demonstrated exceptional market-leading business initiatives that advance the roofing industry.

Van Mark Products Celebrates 50th Anniversary in 2014

Van Mark Products Corp. is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014. Founded in 1964 by Gene Van Cleave, Van Mark has become a worldwide leader in manufacturing portable job-site bending brakes and installation tools for the residential and commercial construction industries.

Union Corrugating Adds Trim Lines to N.C. Manufacturing Facility

Union Corrugating has purchased two new trim lines for its Fayetteville, N.C., manufacturing facility. In its continuing effort to bring the best metal roofing products to the industry, CEO Keith Medick says: “We’ve experienced strong sales growth and were looking at ways to improve both our production capacity and overall product quality. This significant investment helps us in both areas, which will lead to happier customers.”

The new lines improve production tolerances, speed part changeovers and allow for the production of two parts at the same time. Quality improvement of the ridge cap, fascia, rake and corner, and gable trims are most evident because these parts are very visible. “Consistent, closer tolerances of parts off of these lines diminish installation issues and improve the aesthetics of the overall installation,” says Medick.

In addition to the improved quality of parts, the new equipment will provide quicker lead times. “I look at this equipment as another stepping stone to the A+ experience we want to offer our customers,” says Medick. “We keep pushing the bar to new heights.”

PPG to Reintroduce DURANAR ADS Coatings

PPG Industries‘ coil and building products coatings group announced that it will reintroduce DURANAR ADS (air-dried system) fluoropolymer coatings this summer, three years after the products were withdrawn from the market.

This next-generation line of Duranar ADS coatings, based on a newly-formulated fluorinated copolymer resin combined with PPG proprietary chemistry, is designed to repair fluoropolymer coatings on architectural metals damaged during production or after field installation. In addition, these high-performance coatings can provide a wide range of color options for manufacturers and contractors in solid, metallic, pearlescent and infrared-reflective (IR-reflective) pigment technologies.

Brian Knapp, PPG manager, coil and building products coatings, said the reformulated products will fill a specific demand that has been unmet since first-generation Duranar ADS coatings were discontinued. “Other than acrylic lacquers, which are not very durable, there has not been a user-friendly product available for touching up fluoropolymer coatings on products such as window frames, door frames, roofs and metal wall panels marred during fabrication or installation,” he explained.

Because of its single-component formulation, Duranar ADS coating has the flexibility to be applied by fingernail brush for small touch-ups at the end of a production line or to be spray-applied in the field to repair or refurbish weathered metal roofing or siding panels.

Samco Machinery Expands into India

About 10 years ago, Samco Machinery Ltd. discovered a way to improve its business and grow its business through globalization, all while helping customers. CEO Bob Repovs recently presented the Samco story to students at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University as well as the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, both in Ottawa, Ontario.

It’s a story that may serve as a blueprint for a manufacturing or service business in any number of industries. Somewhere, someone needs and wants your products or services. At the risk of oversimplifying, the key is knowing what you do well and, of course, finding someone willing to pay you for that product or service.

Samco Machinery is a manufacturer of rollforming equipment for a variety of industries, including building and construction, storage, automotive and HVAC. Founded in 1972 in Toronto by Joe Repovs (Bob’s father), for years Samco did much of its business in the United States. After reading Thomas Friedman’s bestselling book on globalization, The World is Flat, the Repovs family investigated doing business in India, one of the countries Friedman sited as a country open to North American businesses in his new book.

“We picked India for three reasons,” explains Bob Repovs. “They have a British system of law, so we would have an understanding of how to protect ourselves and our business. They speak English in India and, obviously, communication is very important to making any partnership work. Finally, we had some employees who were born in India and they became a big part of the development process.”

Meetings with potential customers led Samco to an eventual partnership with Tata, a large conglomerate with interests in multiple industries, including an expanding venture in the automotive market. Tata was searching for a way to produce the world’s least expensive car, the Nano. Part of the solution would end up being rollforming equipment from Samco Machinery to produce various parts of the car’s undercarriage.

The equipment was constructed by Samco at its Canadian headquarters at the insistence of Tata because of the quality of Samco’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Samco eventually opened a facility in New Delhi to serve the growing market in India. The country’s infrastructure is growing rapidly and Samco has already supplied roll formers for many products being manufactured in India. Shelving and racking, steel stud and framing, purlins, and automotive are among the growing industries. Samco currently operates the 20,000 square foot plant in India with 60 employees. This corporate growth has not led to any reduction in employees at the Canadian plant. Samco now competes for business in Asia and the Middle East and brings a strong manufacturing reputation.

It may sound simple, but Repovs said the company experienced several growing pains along the way. “Operating in a foreign country has its challenges no doubt, but our experience and knowledge gained in India has helped us export to 32 other countries,” he says.

With a new plant in India, Samco also has been able to hold the price on a number of products in large volumes over time by supplying product to Canada at reduced cost by saving money on labor. Standard mechanical items are manufactured in India and then shipped to Canada where hydraulic and electrical work, integration, and final testing is done.

“The Vision of the Company’s founder to target India over 10 years ago has been an ingredient to our success through tough times and markets,” Repovs says. “The venture has opened doors and created opportunities globally, which otherwise would not have been possible. However, execution of the plan remains everything.”

VELUX America Produces Three Skylight Videos for Roofing Professionals

VELUX America has produced three informational and instructional videos, none longer than three minutes, for roofing industry professionals. Topics include skylight replacement profit potential and customer benefits, skylight selection and skylight installation. The videos feature ENERGY STAR-certified VELUX Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights and explain the advantages of skylight replacement or new installations during scheduled roofing work from the roofer and customer perspectives. The videos also explain the 30 percent federal tax-credit eligibility for the homeowner on product and installation costs, as well as solar-powered blinds.

Choose a Winner Among Four Finalists in ‘Shake It Up’ Exterior Color Contest

DaVinci Roofscapes, a provider of polymer roofing, has announced the five finalists in the 2014 “Shake it Up” Exterior Color Contest. Public online voting is open from May 19 – June 1, 2014, to determine which finalist receives the most votes to win the $5,000 cash grand prize to help the winner add color to the exterior of his or her home.

Led by national color expert Kate Smith, judges evaluated more than 125 contest entries from homeowners across the country wanting to “shake up” the exterior of their homes with color. The five finalists, who will each receive a professionally-created color rendering and product wish list of how they can transform their home’s exterior by adding colorful products to their home, include:

“One finalist’s home is ‘white on white’ and begs for colorful accents while a ‘cookie cutter’ development home needs colorful help to make it stand out in the neighborhood. Then there’s a home that the homeowner deems the ‘ugliest house on the block’ that truly needs colorful new products to help with a transformation. All five of the finalists now have a ‘color blueprint’ to follow with product and color recommendations to give new life to their homes.”

Now that the finalists have been selected, their “before” house image along with the artist’s rendering of what the home could look like, are all posted on the DaVinci Facebook contest page. From May 19 – June 1, people can visit the site and cast their vote for the grand prize winner. The finalist generating the most online public votes will receive the $5,000 cash grand prize.

The artist renderings of the finalist’s homes showcase a variety of color hues recommended by Smith along with colorful polymer Slate and Shake roofs from contest sponsor, DaVinci Roofscapes. Headwaters Inc. Acquires Metals USA’s Stone-coated Metal Roofing Products Business

Headwaters Inc., a building products company dedicated to improving lives through innovative advancements in construction materials, has acquired the assets of Metals USA’s roofing products business (“Gerard”). Founded in 1981, Gerard is the second largest manufacturer of stone coated metal roofing materials in the United States. Gerard sells seven primary metal profiles, including classic tile, barrel vault, and canyon shake. This niche roofing product combines aesthetically pleasing profiles resembling tile, shake, or slate with a fire proof material and a low lifetime installed cost.

“One element of our business strategy is to increase the number of products that we provide to our core customers,” said Kirk A. Benson, Headwaters’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The $2.6 billion specialty niche roofing market is of interest to our core customers and is an area of focus for Headwaters. With the addition of Gerard, we now have three product categories in niche roofing, including composite, concrete, and metal which we believe will open up opportunities for cross selling as well as bundling a complete roofing system, including our Tag & Stick underlayment product.”

Gerard fits Headwaters’ strategy to pursue building product opportunities where we can enjoy strong market share and top quartile industry margins. “We are excited about the combination of our metal roofing products with Headwaters’ composite product,” said Ron Anderson, President of Gerard. “We strongly believe in the sales synergy associated with marketing both products with Gerard’s national sales force, creating opportunities for roofing contractors to pull more product through distribution. “The $28 million transaction will be immediately accretive to earnings. We are funding the transaction with existing balance sheet cash, and of course, will benefit from financial leverage as the operating returns significantly exceed the cost of our debt,” said Don P. Newman, Chief Financial Officer. “Our net debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio will increase slightly with the use of cash, but we remain on track to achieve our desired leverage ratio in 2015.”
