Arkema Presents Technical Paper about Environmentally Safer Coating Systems

Arkema Inc. presented a technical paper on a high-performance, environmentally safer coating system for optimizing the protection of artistic and historic metalwork at the SSPC 2014 Conference on Feb. 11. SSPC 2014, held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., serves as an international forum at which contractors, consultants, inspectors, engineers, paint/equipment manufacturers, and structure/facility owners exchange the latest research and technologies in the coatings industry. The event’s GreenCOAT technical program emphasizes innovations, the latest advances in eco-conscious coating technology, and developments for complying with green regulations.

With decreasing maintenance budgets, caretakers of our outdoor monuments, sculptures, and high-value architectural metalwork face formidable preservation challenges. In response to this urgent issue, the conservation community is continuously searching for more durable, low-maintenance coatings that provide longer-lasting protection against corrosion and degradation. Equally important, these new coating systems need to be environmentally safe, as increasingly stringent restrictions on volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and solvent use are limiting available materials that can be used.

In his presentation on the restoration of historical architectural tiffany metalwork at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Dr. Kurt Wood, a principal scientist in Arkema’s Fluoropolymers R&D Division, explained how Kynar Aquatec PVDF emulsion technology meets the critical needs of the conservation and architectural communities for durable, low maintenance coatings that are safer for the environment. His presentation reviewed the results from accelerated and natural weathering studies, historic architectural metalwork applications at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rodin Museum, and a study of the candidate coatings by a group of experienced metal conservators from across the country.

“Researchers at Arkema Inc. continually strive to optimize PVDF-acrylic hybrid materials for different protective coating applications,” says Dr. Wood. “Ultimately, it is hoped that this collaborative work will serve as a guide to conservators, caretakers, and preservation professionals in implementing new strategies for optimizing the protection of high-value artistic and historic metalwork.”

OMG to Distribute Tubos, Which Extend Vent Stacks on Commercial Roofs

OMG Roofing Products of Agawam, Mass., has become the exclusive worldwide distributor for Tubos Inc., a Clearwater, Fla.-based company that produces products for extending vent stacks on commercial roofs. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Tubos products, patent-pending, can be used to extend plumbing vent stacks that come through the roof. Vent stacks are connected to the plumbing for toilets and waste water, and are critical because they let air into the waste system for proper drainage, and they allow noxious gases to evacuate the building. The International Building Code specifies how tall vent stacks must be over the surface of the roof. Frequently, when re-roofing a commercial building the added insulation takes the existing vent stack out of code compliance. Tubos products are used in these situations.

“We are very pleased to have OMG Roofing Products as our exclusive distributor,” says Kevin Morris, CEO and founder of Tubos Inc. “With their strength in the commercial roofing market and the distribution channel, Tubos will be in a better position to service the entire commercial roofing market, here and abroad.”

“Tubos products solve a very real problem on the roof, and offer roofing contractors a significantly faster method for extending vent stacks,” adds Sam Everett, director of marketing for OMG Roofing Products. “OMG Tubos is a natural extension of our OlyFlow line of roof drains and pipe supports, and clearly meets our brand value statement of improving contractor productivity and enhancing roof system performance. Additionally, OMG Tubos provides a great new opportunity for our distributors, so we are really excited about this product.”

OMG will market the product under the OMG Tubos name. OMG Tubos products are compatible with 2-, 3- and 4-inch diameter plumbing vent stacks. Each Tubos unit is 28-inches long and can be used to extend two vent stacks. In addition, the Tubos product is typically installed in less than five minutes and is compatible with all commercial roofing systems.

IKO Launches Video Showing Time-lapse Installation of Cambridge Shingles versus Competitor Shingles

IKO recently uploaded a new video to the company’s YouTube channel. The video, titled “Time & Material Study: IKO vs. Competitor” is narrated by IKO’s Manager of Sales & Contractor Development John DeRosa who sets the scene in a suburb of Toronto. He explains there’s nothing special about the roof; it’s about 10 squares and has a pitch of approximately 9:12.

What is special is the side-by-side video of time lapse photography as the same roofing crew installs a competitor’s product and IKO’s advantage-size Cambridge shingles. A counter keeps track of how much time has elapsed as well as how many shingles, nails and total bundles were used.

Even with a 7-minute break, the time needed for the crew to install IKO’s shingles on the entire roof surface is nearly 30 minutes shorter, requiring fewer bundles of shingles and nails. The real “advantage”, DeRosa explains, is how IKO’s advantage-sized shingles put contractors in a more favorable cost position, offering them the potential for higher profits.

The video also shows the beauty of IKO’s Cambridge HD Sedona shingles. The company introduced its “Nature’s Accents Collection” of premium architectural laminated asphalt shingles in 2013. The collection currently includes five color blends made possible with IKO’s patented color blending technology and named for the national parks and landscapes that inspired them: Sedona, Glacier, Appalachian, Biscayne and Pacific Rim.

DeRosa says: “With their high-definition profile and truly striking color blends, Cambridge HD shingles are quickly proving popular among homeowners and contractors. As this new video clearly shows, the ‘IKO Advantage’ is realized by the contractor needing to install fewer bundles on a project. Less bundles means lower material costs, less labor to complete the job and a better bottom line for the roofer. In today’s competitive market, contractors need every possible advantage. And this is a HUGE one.”

Bluebeam Assists Future Construction Industry Professionals

Bluebeam Software, a developer of PDF-based markup, measurement and collaboration solutions for design, construction and other technical professionals, recently exhibited at the 27th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition and Construction Management Conference in Sparks, Nev. ASC, an association dedicated to promoting excellence in construction education, is becoming an increasingly important resource contributing to the development of Bluebeam’s academic outreach program.

While Bluebeam is attending the conference to show students and educational professionals how the company’s flagship solution, Revu, streamlines project communication, company representatives will also be looking to learn more about the challenges that construction management students and academic professionals face. Bluebeam attributes a sharp increase in students and professors inquiring about Revu licenses for school labs and competitions to a renewed commitment by institutions to engage with the industry, define the essential skills graduates will need to be competitive and to provide the critical tools that will enhance those skills.

The ASC Competition provides university students with the unique and highly competitive opportunity to partner with top design and construction firms. Student teams apply their skills in solving the types of problems that they would face during the bidding and procurement phases of real-world construction projects.

“During the 2013 Associated Schools of Construction competition, my team was able to simultaneously and in real time work on marking up the construction drawings with all of the amazing features in Bluebeam Revu,” says Boris Morales, a San Diego State University student. “In this competition, time is very limited; therefore, Bluebeam Revu was an integral part of our team securing 2nd place.”

“More and more students are requesting Revu to gain a competitive edge in competitions like ASC’s,” says Sasha Reed, Director of Strategic Alliances at Bluebeam. “And we’re inspired when we hear from educators who want to incorporate Revu into their curriculum so that their students can push the limits of project communication when they graduate into the workforce.”

In addition to providing Revu licenses for student competitions, Bluebeam is investing in the future of the industry by furnishing university labs with Revu licenses, offering hands-on training and providing opportunities for Revu to be incorporated into the curriculum.

“I was blown away with what Bluebeam Revu could do when our group went through the training—so much more than Acrobat ever did!” says Clark Cory, associate professor of Computer Graphics Technology – BIM Specialty at Purdue University. “I am still experimenting with most of the features, but anticipate utilizing 3D PDFs soon in coursework! Revu is simply amazing!”
