AccuTrac Helps Ohio Roofing Contracting Firm Achieve Safety Innovation Award

OMG Roofing Products has announced Advanced Industrial Roofing of Massillon, Ohio, has won the Judge’s Choice OSC Safety Innovation Award from the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation by demonstrating the benefits of using the AccuTrac System versus the traditional roofing fastener application method.

AccuTrac from OMG Roofing Products is an ergonomically correct stand-up tool that aligns and installs the insulation fastener in one motion. The system eliminates the need for continuous bending, twisting or kneeling often required in mechanically fastening roof insulation. AccuTrac also keeps workers safer by keeping their hands and face further away from the installation point.

“We have used the AccuTrac System for three years and it has enabled us to increase productivity by 52 percent while keeping our employees safer while they work,” says Fred Horner, president and CEO of Advanced Industrial Roofing. “AccuTrac has given our workers the ability to perform their duties more effectively and enables them to work later in life.”

Sims Crane Earns Insurance-premium Reduction

Because of its superior on-the-job safety score, Sims Crane & Equipment Co. has again earned a significant reduction in its insurance premium. The firm’s Experience Modification Rate (EMR) is 0.68, meaning its insurance premiums will be 68 percent of the premiums required from less safe companies.

“The EMR is a rigorous standard set by insurance companies and the state, so having those outside third parties attest to our superior workplace safety practices and our culture of safety at Sims is a credit to everyone who works here,” declared Dean Sims II, vice president of Marketing at Sims Crane & Equipment.

The EMR is a gauge of past cost of injuries and future probability of injuries. An EMR of 1.0 is considered industry average. The lower the EMR, the lower the firm’s worker compensation insurance premiums will be. The EMR is designed to measure whether a company’s workers’ compensation losses are better or worse than expected. If the experience is worse than expected, a company is punished with a high EMR greater than 1.0. If the experience is better than expected, a company is rewarded with a low EMR below 1.0, paying less for workers compensation premium than a company with a high EMR.

“In Florida, Workers Compensation rates are ultimately determined by the Florida State Department of Insurance. The only real mechanism to apply either good or bad loss experience to the premium calculation is through the experience modifier,” adds Randy Proos, with USI Insurance Services in Coral Gables.

The EMR is calculated by a rating bureau, the National Council on Compensation Insurance, using three years of past loss history, excluding the immediate past year. The 2014 EMR is calculated using the 2012, 2011, 2010 loss experience.

With 325 employees and 381 cranes, lifting devices and associated support equipment operating out of 11 regional offices in Florida, Tampa-based Sims Crane & Equipment Co. is ranked No. 1 in Florida and No. 14 in the nation by American Crane and Transport magazine. Since its founding in Tampa 54 years ago, Sims has been known for its safe, cost-effective, creative and on-time customer service, offering the latest in 3-D lift planning, total transport capabilities, a fully trained service department, and a team of onsite consultants and application specialists.

Matt Martino Joins Morin as Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Matt Martino is joining Morin, a Kingspan Group company, in the role of vice president of Sales and Marketing effective June 1. Martino will oversee and manage six Morin regional sales managers and five independent representative groups across the U.S.

“Matt’s most recent experience with Kingspan Benchmark is both strategic and advantageous, bringing with him his keen technical knowledge of our industry and in particular our metal panel systems; the key players and challenges facing the architectural and design communities,” says Ilhan Eser, CEO of Morin.

“As a leader in architectural single component products, we need to make it a priority to support the architectural community,” Martino adds. “That means being a partner with our customers as opposed to simply a supplier. It also means that, with the advent of systems like Karrier Panel, we need to be a design-stage resource for questions regarding not just aesthetics but also things like proper air, water, thermal and vapor barrier design. If we want to be more than just a cladding element, it will be our job to educate and assist the market as such.”

With production facilities in Bristol, Conn.; Deland, Fla.; and Fontana, Calif., MORIN has a combined production capacity of over 50 million square feet, fabricating metal panels in more than 75 different profiles. BASF Program Brings a Holistic Approach to Acrylics Used in Roof Coatings

BASF recently introduced the new BASF Brilliance program. The program is part of BASF Dispersions & Pigments’ Construction and Fiber Bonding group’s new and innovative roof coating program that brings to the roofing market a holistic approach to acrylics used in roof coatings. Brilliance also brings BASF’s broad portfolio of formulation additives to roof coating manufacturers to meet market demands.

During 2014, Brilliance will launch eight new and innovative products including Acronal 4333 X Quick-Trigger, which allows the roof coating manufacturers enhanced early rain resistance following application, the ability to apply two coats in a single day and extension of their roofing season through a wider range of temperatures where the coating can be applied.

“We are very excited about launching the Brilliance campaign where we will showcase ‘the brightest roofs under the sun’ given our goal to bring innovation and sustainable solutions to the flexible roof coating market,” says Michael Guibault, industry manager, Construction & Fiber Bonding, for BASF in North America. “Our roofing products are engineered based on industry input, focused on customer needs and provide value added solutions. These products allow our customers a competitive edge, and therefore, help our customers be more successful.”

The Dispersions & Pigments Division in North America offers a comprehensive portfolio of resins, binders, latex, pigments and effect pigments, colorants and systems to meet specific application needs for the coatings, construction, and printing and packaging markets. The products also help manufacturers in the adhesives, nonwovens and fiber bonding industries meet functional and performance demands. The addition of key product areas such as formulation additives, rheology modifiers, light stabilizers, photoinitiators, and antioxidants significantly enhances the existing BASF product portfolio for these markets.

MetalPro Program Sees Record Number of New Members

Union Corrugating’s MetalPro program saw a record number of new members in 2013. MetalPro helps new and experienced metal roofing contractors refine their skills and stay up to date on the latest installation procedures.

“Contractors are on the front lines of the metal roofing market, and they are seeing an increased interest and popularity of residential metal roofing,” says Jason Thornton, Union’s vice president of Sales and Marketing. “As a result, we decided to look at how we could add training sessions to the MetalPro program to assure our contractors stay ahead of this increasing market.”

The MetalPro program provides training on the latest products and installation processes and techniques with a focus on residential applications. It also provides members with sales and marketing information they can use when talking with homeowners. Thornton adds, “In 2014, we will be conducting a minimum of one MetalPro session each week for the entire year. We’ve also added more advanced training so that existing members can continue to learn.”

The Basic MetalPro training class is required for all new members. In addition, Union has added new classes to the 2014 schedule, including:
