Metal Nailers Offer Alternative in Wake of Lumber Shortage

OMG Roofing Products offers EdgeBox RI, an engineered metal alternative to traditional wood nailers, to provide roofing contractors with an alternative to wood nailers during an unprecedented lumber shortage and related price increase. According to the company, EdgeBox RI is a more economical option that can help improve rooftop productivity and roof performance. 

The EdgeBox RI system is made of heavy-duty 20-gauge galvanized steel with reinforcing spines that will not rot, twist, or split like traditional lumber. The product is ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 tested and Factory Mutual approved with an FM 1-540 perimeter rating and FM 1-360 corner rating. Snow Retention System

Dynamic Fastener’s Dyna-Guard snow retention system is designed to be used on virtually any style metal roof. Dyna-Guard is an 8-foot long extruded aluminum rail with a T-shape profile. Dyna-Guard is installed by attaching non-ferrous clamps or mounts to a metal roof and bolting or screwing the system to clamps or mounts. Eight Dyna-Clamps with round-point stainless steel set screws and Sno-Dams are also offered. New Bracket Technology for Trapezoidal Rib Metal Roof Profiles

Structural Thermal Break for Steel-to-Steel Connections

The Schöck Isokorb Type S structural thermal break is a load-bearing thermal insulation element designed to insulate and support structural steel penetrating the building envelope, such as balconies, canopies, beams, and rooftop connections for solar panels and HVAC systems. It consists of a proprietary insulating material 1.5 to 3 inch in thickness, placed between stainless steel plates on each face with a stainless steel tube welded between them. The plates and tube impart the module with the requisite stiffness to transfer axial, shear and bending stresses, while minimizing or eliminating the risk of mold and corrosion by preventing interior surfaces from cooling and forming condensation. 

The placement of the engineered unit between the endplates of steel beams minimizes the surface area where the load bearing components of the structural thermal break cross the insulating layer and attach to the structural steel beams, satisfying both thermal and structural requirements. The use of stainless steel load bearing components contributes to the insulating performance of the module by conducting two thirds less thermal energy than would equivalent structural steel components.

It accommodates normal, as well as shear forces. Moments can be transferred by using a minimum number of two modules, one on top of the other. Quantity and layout in the construction are dictated by the size of the profiles’ loading requirements.

Modular design of the Type S component allows adaptation to nearly all profile sizes and load bearing capacity requirements. The company manufactures 15 types of structural thermal breaks for concrete-to-concrete, concrete-to-steel, and steel-to-steel connections.

Insulated Heating Boxes and Wraps Available for Adhesive Canisters

To extend the roofing season with OlyBond500 Canisters, OMG Roofing Products now offers Powerblanket Foam Box Heaters and Powerblanket Wraps. Insulated Powerblanket Foam Box Heaters are 16 inches square and provide uniform heat of 100° F (38° C) to one carton containing an OlyBond500 Canister. Insulated Powerblanket Wraps measure 20 by 45 inches, enabling complete single-canister coverage and are pre-set to 90° F (32° C). Both Wraps and Box Heaters are designed to maximize adhesive yield by minimizing waste of temperature-sensitive insulation adhesives such as OlyBond500. All Powerblanket products operate on standard 120 volt current and come with a 6-foot power cord. 

“For proper application and performance, it is critical that the canister adhesive is stored and dispensed at about 70° F (21° C),” said Jim Lavallee, OlyBond product manager for OMG Roofing Products. “This ensures that there’s adequate pressure in the tanks and that the viscosity of each part is maintained to keep the final mixture on-ratio. Powerblanket products do a great job in keeping OlyBond Canisters at the appropriate temperature for dispensing.”
