According to show management, the 2017 International Roofing Expo (IRE) was the largest show in its 62-year history, with a record crowd on hand to tour the sold-out show floor. The event took place March 1-3 in Las Vegas, and the annual trade show and conference drew a total attendance of 11,273 roofing construction professionals.

The 2017 IRE set a new attendance record, and booths on the show floor were busy, including that of the NRCA, the show’s official sponsor.

“The IRE was by far the most attended and exciting, good vibe show I have ever attended,” said Michelle Draucker of Commercial Roofers Inc. “The sessions were educational, surprising and entertaining. The expo floor was filled with great energy. This was the best IRE show to date.”

“This is my second trip to the IRE and it gets better each time,” said Torben Begines of Cobra BEC Inc. “The opportunity to network and see new products firsthand and be able to ask questions regarding them is invaluable.”

Exhibit Hall

Exhibitors were pleased with the number of leads and inquiries generated during the show, according to show management. “The IRE 2017 was incredible,” said Jonathan L. Rider, CSI, of D.I. Roof Seamers. “I have not witnessed quality leads and such high attendance at the show since before 2008.”

“This year’s show surpassed our expectations. The number of attendees was high, as was the level of excitement and positivity about the year ahead,” said Rob Heselbarth of Petersen Aluminum. “We enjoyed strengthening relationships with our existing customers, and talking with potential customers about doing business moving forward.”

Of the 476 exhibiting companies, 88 companies were first-time exhibitors, including Freudenberg Performance Materials, F-Wave, HAL Industries, MIFAB RoofGuard, Rhino Linings Corp., RoofSnap and Roser – Stone Coated Steel, just to name a few.

“We are a new company and this was our first time to participate in IRE,” said Ivona Mollberg of Green Link, Inc. “We were pleasantly surprised by the traffic at our booth and came away with more leads than we anticipated.”

“The International Roofing Expo was an excellent event,” said Holly Anderson of Wood’s Powr-Grip. “The attendance surpassed expectations and gave us the opportunity to present our products to a broad but relevant audience.”

“The show was a phenomenal success for us,” said Daron Akins of OmniMax Roofing, Inc. “With hundreds visiting our booth, we could not have asked for better!”

“The International Roofing Expo continues to expand our business on an international level. Great investment exhibiting at this expo, and relationship building opportunities are endless,” said Eric Velliquette of Lakeside Construction Fasteners. “The IRE brings large and small companies together impacting the metal roofing industry around the world.”

“The show flow at the IRE was filled with tremendous energy this year,” said Reid Ribble, CEO of NRCA, the shows official sponsor, who had a 2,000-square foot booth at the event, and hosted the NRCA Annual Convention in conjunction with IRE. “NRCA was able to engage with an unbelievable amount of roofing professionals, and all were extremely positive not only about the success of this year’s show, but about the overall future of the roofing industry.”

Educational Conference and Special Events

In addition to the show floor’s buying and selling activity, the show’s educational conference offered 44 educational sessions addressing a multitude of industry issues. Conference attendance increased 39 percent over last year.

“The seminars and demonstrations blew me away, and I came away with new information and ideas that I have already started to implement in my day to day routine,” said Mike Mitchell of Pioneer Roofing Co. “This new information will be invaluable to my performance going forward.”

Kemper System Will Showcase Liquid-Applied Protective Solutions at IRE

Kemper System America Inc. will showcase a range of cold liquid-applied protective solutions for the building envelope at the International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas, March 1-3, and demonstrate product application at booth 217.

Kemper System protects surfaces across the globe. Solutions to be featured at IRE include:

  • Two fully reinforced membrane systems that can transform roof decks into reflective cool roofs, or provide monolithic protection for green roofs, blue roofs, and a range of other projects.
  • Two new coatings systems for protecting surfaces prone to heavy wear such as parking garages, balconies and walkways.

Waterproofing Membrane Systems

The two reinforced waterproofing membrane systems are cold liquid-applied and ideal for cool roof applications:

  • Kemperol AC Speed FR system is a Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)
  • Kemperol Reflect 2K FR is a low-VOC system

Both are fire rated for Class A assemblies and exceed LEED solar reflective requirements with SRI ratings of 108 and 110, respectively.

Durable Wear Coatings

For protecting parking garages, pedestrian decks, and loading docks, the COLEAN Parking System can withstand deterioration caused by natural elements and vehicular traffic. In addition, the COLEAN Balcony System, which is designed to expand and contract with normal structural movements, protects balconies, terraces, walkways, patios, sun decks, and machine rooms from freeze/thaw damage and chemical exposure.

Kemper System America also offers a way to prolong the life of existing roofs with elastomer-based coating systems, one of four technologies added through the acquisition of STS Coatings Inc. in December.

“Our building envelope solutions go beyond roof waterproofing to make the building specifier’s job easier. These solutions create opportunities for contractors and value for building owners,” says Richard Doornink, president and managing director of Kemper System America Inc.

For over 60 years, Kemper System has led in cold-liquid applied, reinforced roofing and waterproofing, having invented the technology and holding the first patents. Today the company offers a range of building envelope solutions to protect against weather, preserve the integrity of surfaces, and enhance the comfort and value of public buildings and commercial real estate.

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress Hosts Construction Management Student Competition at IRE

Teams from six undergraduate universities are scheduled to compete in the third annual Construction Management Student Competition, hosted by The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress. This marks the largest group to compete in the competition, which promotes careers in construction management. This year’s event will culminate with presentations at NRCA’s 130th Annual Convention and the 2017 International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas.

According to the Alliance, the competition is part of an educational partnership with six schools of construction management: McWhorter School of Building Sciences at Auburn University, Auburn, Ala.; Department of Construction Management at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo.; M.E. Rinker Sr. School of Building Construction at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla.; Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Ala.; Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, La.; and University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Teams participating in the 2017 Construction Management Student Competition were presented with a challenging problem: create a company to bid on installing a roof system on the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Each team was required to research the project, review the plans and specifications, and assemble an estimate and proposal to submit a qualified bid package. Goals included finding a competitive edge in their estimate to beat their competition while still maintaining a reasonable profit margin. For this project, it was important to decide on the correct application methods, show overall roofing knowledge, and illustrate a company team is prepared to undertake the project.

Oral presentations are scheduled to take place March 2 from 7:45 to 11:15 a.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center (North Hall) Islander I. The winning team will be announced during NRCA’s Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception held on March 2 and will receive a team trophy and a $5,000 L.B. Conway scholarship for their school. Members of the winning team also receive individual awards and recognition in Professional Roofing magazine, among other promotions.

For more information about the student competition, call Bennett Judson, the executive director of the Alliance, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7513, or email him at bjudson@roofingindustryalliance.net.
