Arkema to Introduce New Specification Guides at METALCON

Arkema Inc.will present its Kynar 500 FSF and Kynar Aquatec polyvinylidene fluoride resins used in high-performance coatings, along with Bostik’s hurricane-resistant adhesive products, at METALCON 2017, to be held Oct. 18–21 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Kynar 500 FSF resin-based coatings for aluminum, galvanized steel and aluminized steel exceed the exterior AAMA 2605 specification for resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss loss and chemicals. This next-generation Kynar 500 PVDF technology can also contribute to LEED credits, as it is produced using a patented fluorosurfactant-free process.

According to the company, Kynar Aquatec PVDF emulsions provide the same long-lasting protection as Kynar 500 resin-based coatings in an easy-to-apply waterborne form. Given their excellent weatherability and exceptional resistance to dirt pickup and biological growth, Kynar Aquatec resin-based coatings offer a high-performance solution for metal restoration and repair projects, as well as a variety of other applications.

At the show, Arkema Inc. will introduce its new Kynar Aquatec specification guides for façade restoration and cool roof coatings applications. Each 14-page guide is divided into the Construction Specifier Institute’s three-part format and written in concise language to facilitate the evaluation of coating systems for meeting a metal restoration or cool-roof project’s long life, durability and sustainability goals.

During the event, Bostik, an Arkema company, will also present its full line of “smart adhesives” and sealants for a wide variety of metal construction applications. These high-performance products provide unprimed adhesion to Kynar 500 FSF and Kynar Aquatec resin-based coatings, are hurricane-strong (Miami-Dade County hurricane-approved) and come with a best-in-class warranty.

The new specification guides on field-applied fluoropolymer coatings for façade restoration and cool-roof applications will abe available at the Arkema exhibit at METALCON (booth 923). For more information, visit kynar500.comkynaraquatec.com and bostik-industrial.com.

Arkema Inc. Provides Guidelines to Estimate Topcoat Color Fade

Arkema Inc. presented recommended guidelines for estimating the color fade of PVDF-based topcoats for bright color architectural restoration and protective coating applications at the SSPC 2017 Conference in Tampa, Fla.

This year’s SSPC Conference served as an international forum at which contractors, consultants, inspectors, engineers, paint/equipment manufacturers and structure/facility owners exchanged research and technologies in the coatings industry. The event’s GreenCOAT technical program emphasized innovations, the latest advances in eco-conscious coating technology and developments for complying with green regulations.

Many common topcoat standards used for architectural and protective coating applications include a durability requirement based on the accelerated weathering performance of a white coating. However, there are currently no standards for field-applied coatings that address the needs of specifiers who want to ensure color performance in high-chroma (saturated or bright) colors.

Dr. Kurt Wood, a principal scientist in Arkema’s Fluoropolymers R&D Division, reviewed data for coatings made using a range of pigment chemistries, enabling estimates of color lifetime to be made for virtually any color, if one stays within the particular resin chemistry space. These principles were demonstrated with PVDF-based topcoats, where it was found that both the pigment grades and the resin are important factors for determining the color lifetime, along with the pigment volume concentration.

MCA Recognizes Eight Building Projects at Awards Show

Selected by a panel of professional architects, eight building projects from across the country have been recognized by the Metal Construction Association (MCA) at the 2017 Chairman’s Awards show.

Announced at the MCA’s winter meeting held in Weston, Fla., the Chairman’s Awards are given to the year’s most exceptional building projects involving MCA member companies. Awards are based on overall appearance, significance of metal in the project, innovative use of metal, and the role of metal in achieving project objectives.

The MCA Chairman’s Awards were given in eight categories: overall excellence; residential; metal roofing; education, primary and secondary schools; education, colleges and universities; institutional; municipal; and commercial/industrial.

The 2016 Chairman’s Award winners in each category were:

Recipients for these awards are selected each year from projects submitted by MCA members to “Metal Architecture Magazine’s” annual Design Awards Program. The honorees were chosen by a panel of professional architects, which included Mark Dewalt, AIA, principal, Valerio Dewalt Train Associates, Chicago; Mark Horton, FAIA, principal, Mark Horton/Architecture, San Francisco; Brent Schipper, AIA, LEED AP, principal, ASK Studio, Des Moines, Iowa.

Arkema Celebrates 50 Years of Kynar 500 Weatherable Resin

Kynar 500 resin is used in long-life coatings that protect some of the world's iconic buildings, including The Pyramid of Louvre in Paris.

Kynar 500 resin is used in long-life coatings that protect some of the world’s iconic buildings, including The Pyramid of Louvre in Paris.

Arkema Inc. has launched an integrated marketing campaign to commemorate 50 years of Kynar 500 resin-based coatings.

Introduced in 1965, Kynar 500 is a weatherable resin for creating long-life coatings with the capability to retain color and gloss. Today, coatings formulated with this pioneering fluoropolymer chemistry provide billions of square feet of protection against weathering, aging and pollution on commercial, industrial, institutional and residential buildings around the globe.

The integrated marketing program, “Kynar 500—The Best Get It,” includes a commemorative 50th anniversary logo, an email campaign, promotions at industry trade shows, public relations, and advertisements in print and online media outlets. Central to the 50th anniversary celebration is an anniversary microsite on kynar500.com that greets visitors with a series of videos showcasing iconic buildings around the world that, with the help of Kynar 500 architectural coatings, have stood the test of time. On the microsite’s landing page, users can download the augmented reality app Aurasma to stay connected to the celebration all year long by scanning the Kynar 500 50th anniversary logo wherever it appears. The anniversary celebration also includes a social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Google+ that will allow followers to engage with the brand in new and exciting ways.
