CertainTeed Achieves ISO 9001 Certification at Roofing Plant

CertainTeed’s roofing business has achieved International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 certification at its Little Rock, Ark., plant.

ISO 9001 standards were created to help companies establish requirements to maintain and manage processes influencing quality. To secure the globally recognized certification, CertainTeed developed a formalized quality management system that underwent rigorous review by third party auditor Underwriters Laboratories.

“CertainTeed has made manufacturing quality roofing products a priority for more than 110 years. We continue this quality commitment by achieving ISO 9001 certification,” says Tim Ginsbach, plant manager at CertainTeed’s Little Rock roofing plant. “This is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of all our employees. It was clear that they treat this as much more than a question of compliance to a standard, but as a way to provide confidence in the products and services they deliver to our customers.”

To secure ISO 9001, the Little Rock plant successfully demonstrated the ability to consistently manufacture roofing products that meet customer demand and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. In addition, the facility pledges to constantly find ways to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the quality management system, including processes for continual improvement and assurance of conformity to requirements.

In operation since 1952, the Little Rock roofing plant and its 81 employees manufacture four CertainTeed commercial modified bitumen roofing membrane product lines: APP (Atactic Polypropylene) modified, including the Flintlastic GTA cap membrane; SBS (Styrene Butadine Styrene) modified hot and cold applied products, featuring Flintlastic Ultra Poly SMS base/ply sheet and Flintlastic GMS mineral surfaced polyester cap membrane; SBS modified Flintlastic SA (Self-Adhering) NailBase, PlyBase, MidPly and Cap; and traditional BUR (Built-Up Roofing), including GlasBase base sheets and Flintglas mineral surfaced cap sheets. Many of the cap membranes are available in CertainTeed’s CoolStar highly solar reflective mineral surfacing.

This is the Little Rock plant’s second ISO certification. Previously, the plant received ISO 14001, created to help companies minimize their environmental impact and achieve continual improvement of environmental performance.

CertainTeed operates 12 roofing facilities throughout the U.S. that are fully engaged in quality control while reducing the company’s environmental footprint. Collectively, the plants divert more than 250,000 tons of waste a year from landfills. In addition to bituminous commercial roofing, CertainTeed offers innovative products that significantly boost the energy efficiency of a home, including Landmark Solaris solar reflective asphalt shingles and the Apollo II solar roofing system.

GAF Acquires Quest Construction Products

GAF announced it has completed the acquisition of Quest Construction Products (QCP), a former division of Quest Specialty Chemicals and a supplier of fluid-applied roofing systems and roof-coating products in North America. The transaction, which also provides GAF with a strong presence in coating solutions for pavement and vertical surfaces, is expected to accelerate the robust growth of GAF’s commercial business.

QCP brings excellent brands and product lines to GAF including the Hydro-Stop family of liquid membrane products, the United Coatings line of coating solutions, and the StreetBond pavement coatings. The acquisition instantly gives GAF a position in a high-tech, environmentally friendly, and economically efficient segment of the commercial roofing business.

QCP’s strategically positioned geographic footprint and unique technical expertise in the field will provide GAF with additional solutions to bring to its customers. QCP’s products have gained rapid acceptance in the marketplace due largely to their reflectivity, ease of application, and energy-efficiency. These highly practical and effective products will complement GAF’s existing offerings of roofing technologies and commercial solar solutions.

Asphalt Roofing Provides Comprehensive Weather Protection for a Luxury Condominium

Working with the unique variables of a region and its climate poses a significant challenge to roofing contractors. Installing a roof system that looks beautiful and can stand up to ice, snow and freezing temperatures takes an expertise that only comes with experience. This is the case in the snowy and picturesque mountains of Park City, Utah. The city is a winter haven for skiers who vacation there, but the extended snow and cold season can deliver a beating to a roof.

The Grand Lodge at Deer Valley Resort, a luxury condominium development at one of North America’s top-ranked ski resorts, sits at an elevation of 9,000 feet in the mountainous area. Along with the breathtaking views comes an average annual snowfall of 350 inches. As a result, the 40,000-square-foot concrete tile roof of the lodge had begun to fail after only six years of intense weather and needed to be replaced immediately.

Dangerous icicles would form, and noisy chainsaws were frequently needed to cut through the ice on the 5-story building. In 2013, the owner of the condominium decided to completely redesign the roofing system. IronClad Exteriors Inc., a Sandy, Utah-based roofing company had successfully installed roofs for Deer Valley in the past and was contacted by Deer Valley Resort Management to consult on the new design.

“Due to insufficient insulation and poor ventilation on the existing roof, ice dams were forming, tiles were cracking and the roof was falling apart,” says Eric Kircher, owner of IronClad Exteriors. “There was an architect involved in redesigning the roof … . I was asked to take a look at the design, and I recommended an asphalt shingle roof instead.

Kircher advised that a full asphalt roofing system with proper insulation and moisture protection would be able to withstand the harsh weather of the ski resort.

“Asphalt was the ideal material for the reroof for reasons that involve aesthetics, safety, and the long-term health and viability of the roof,” he notes. “I recommended a shake style because it really fit the architecture and look of the roof while being able to protect the building and residents from the weather conditions.”

FlintBoard ISO NB (Nail Base) Composite Polyisocyanurate/OSB Roof insulation was installed over the plywood deck, followed by a 3- by 10-inch fascia board. WinterGuard HT advanced waterproofing underlayment and DiamondDeck High Performance Synthetic Underlayment were then added to provide important moisture resistance. Finally, the Presidential Shake TL asphalt shingles provided a beautiful look that matched the lodge’s breathtaking surroundings. The project was completed in November 2014.

The Grand Lodge’s new asphalt roof also contains a unique feature that sets it apart in form and function. IronClad installed 11,000 copper snow guards that offer another layer of weather protection. Snow freezes around the copper pieces and keeps it from sliding down the roof to form dangerous ice dams at the eaves. Lodge residents no longer have to walk underneath potentially hazardous icicles or listen to the sounds of manlifts and chainsaws that are used to remove them.

“The roofing system we designed had the unique ability to withstand that type of cold environment,” Kircher notes. “There will be no heat loss contributing to ice and snow on the eaves, and the insulation protects the interior of the lodge. These are high-end condominiums with finished ceilings and no attic space at the top where you can put more insulation, so the insulation had to be installed on the existing roof deck to prevent ice dams.”

The installation process went smoothly despite the challenges brought on by Park City’s weather. Snow can begin to fall as early as September and lasts through the spring, providing little time for construction projects to take place. Fortunately, IronClad had extensive experience with the roofing systems needed in Park City.

GAF Plans to Open PVC Manufacturing Line in Cedar City, Utah

GAF announced plans to open a PVC manufacturing line at its commercial roofing plant in Cedar City, Utah. The line, which GAF expects to become operational as early as mid-2016, will transform the Cedar City operation into a full-service manufacturer and supplier of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) single-ply membranes, as well as polyisocyanurate (ISO) insulation.

GAF also announced that it is actively considering locations for an additional plant in the eastern U.S. that will manufacture PVC, TPO and ISO. Known for its flexibility, ease of application and chemical resistance, PVC remains a single-ply solution among commercial roofing contractors.

“The Cedar City PVC line will strengthen GAF’s position as a full-service supplier of PVC, TPO and ISO. By manufacturing all three products at Cedar City and soon on the east coast, we will deliver economies of scale to our operations and quality service to our customers. This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to growth and leadership in the low-slope roofing market,” says Bob Tafaro, president and CEO of GAF.

Copper Development Association Names President

Thomas S. Passek has been named president of the Copper Development Association (CDA) effective February 1, 2015. He succeeds Andrew Kireta Sr., who retired this January after 36 years with the organization.

Passek brings nearly three decades of metals industry and association management experience to CDA. He was most recently the managing director of the ASM International (formerly the American Society of Metals), an organization that serves metallurgists, materials professionals and managers worldwide.

Passek also served as the executive director of The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), where he worked with standards-setting bodies including ASME, ASTM and ISO TAG groups. He is a member of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives as well as the American Society of Association Executives.

“Thom’s significant experience makes him a strong choice to lead CDA,” says Stephen Higgins, CDA chairman. “I am confident that through his demonstrated ability to successfully lead a large professional association, Passek will continue to advance the strength and influence of CDA.”

PIMA Announces Environmental Product Declarations for Polyiso Roof and Wall Insulations

Consistent with its delivery of energy-efficient and sustainable building insulation solutions, the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) announced the receipt of third party-verified ISO-compliant Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for polyisocyanurate (polyiso) roof and wall insulations as manufactured by PIMA members across North America. An EPD is an internationally recognized and standardized tool that reports the environmental impacts of products.

These EPDs document that the energy-savings potential of polyiso roof and wall insulation during a typical 60-year building life span is equal to up to 47 times the initial energy required to produce, transport, install, maintain, and eventually remove and dispose of the insulation. In addition to a high return on embodied energy, the EPDs document that polyiso roof and wall insulation offer high unit R-value per inch, zero ozone depletion potential, recycled content, opportunity for reuse and outstanding fire performance.

Beyond providing consistent and comparable environmental impact data, the PIMA polyiso EPDs also present information about additional environmental and energy characteristics, including the high net return on energy provided by polyiso roof and wall insulation.

Specifically, the polyiso EPDs describe the environmental impacts of the combined weighted average production for PIMA member manufacturing locations located across the United States and Canada, based on an established set of product category rules applicable to all types of building thermal insulation. The environmental impacts reported in the PIMA polyiso EPDs are derived from independently verified cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) process, including all critical elements related to the resourcing, production, transport, installation, maintenance, and eventual removal and replacement of polyiso roof and wall insulation.

Using the LCA process, the PIMA polyiso roof and wall insulation products are evaluated on a number of impact categories including global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, eutrophication potential, acidification potential, and smog creation potential, as well as other environmental indicators including primary energy demand, resource depletion, waste to disposal, waste to energy, and water use.

PIMA polyiso roof and wall insulation EPDs also meet the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED v4 Green Building Rating System under Credit MRC-2 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization: Environmental Product Declarations as industry-wide or generic declarations that may be valued as one-half of an eligible product for the purposes of credit calculation.

“These third party-verified EPDs for polyiso roof and wall insulation products produced by PIMA manufacturers reflect our industry’s commitment to sustainability and transparency in reporting environmental performance,” says Jared Blum, president of PIMA. “These EPDs will be a valuable tool to provide environmental information to all building and design professionals, and they should be especially helpful in meeting emerging criteria for green building design.”

TPO Has Begun Shipping from GAF’s New Cedar City, Utah, Plant

GAF has started shipments from its new thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and polyisocyanurate (ISO) plant in Cedar City, Utah. Construction of the state-of-the-art site was announced in spring of 2013; it houses GAF’s third TPO and third ISO production lines (and it’s the company’s second combined TPO/ISO facility). TPO began shipping from Cedar City on Aug. 1 and ISO products are expected to begin shipping in early 2015.

The 541,000-square-foot plant produces the full line of GAF TPO products, including EverGuard TPO and EverGuard Extreme TPO, and it will manufacture both ISO roof insulation and residential sheathing. In addition, the plant will include a new training center for CARE (the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence), to support the continued and growing demand for their training classes.

“Our venture in Cedar City is an example of GAF’s continued strategic investment in the commercial roofing industry,” stated Gerry Messina, GAF’s executive director of commercial marketing. “The facility will give us the ability to better service our customers throughout the country.”

An American-owned company with American-made products, GAF is proud to create additional jobs in the U.S. There are currently 40 employees at the plant, with an additional 10-15 expected. The company also produces TPO at its Mount Vernon, Ind., and Gainesville, Texas, facilities.

Receive Pallets of Duro-Last ISO without Additional Freight Costs

Duro-Last Inc. announces that 11Ž2- and 2-inch thick, 4- by 8-foot Duro-Guard ISO (Polyisocyanurate) insulation is available from all Duro-Last manufacturing locations for contractors to pick up or to “fill up” a flatbed shipment. These locations include Saginaw, Mich.; Grants Pass, Ore.; Jackson, Miss.; Sigourney, Iowa; and Carrollton, Texas.

This is another cost-effective and convenient option for customers to take delivery of the most popular Duro-Guard ISO products where there is open space on a flatbed truck that is delivering a Duro-Last roof order. This means that Duro-Last customers can receive pallets of ISO without incurring any additional freight cost.

Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance Completes ISO-compliant Life Cycle Assessments

The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA), the educational and technical resource to the spray polyurethane foam industry, has announced the completion of an ISO-compliant Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for three generic formulations that include open-cell, closed-cell and roofing foams. The Life Cycle Assessment is published and available as a free download from the SPFA website. Using the results of the LCA, the SPFA has collaborated with UL Environments to develop an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which allows spray polyurethane foam contractors to assist sustainable building designers in obtaining proper credit among leading sustainable building programs for spray foam insulation and roofing materials use.

An EPD is a third-party reviewed document that summarizes the results of the more detailed LCA. EPDs are required by design professionals to satisfy requirements of many sustainable building programs, such as the US Green Building Council’s LEED v4 program, the International Green Construction Code and GreenGlobes, to name a few. For example, the current LEED v4 program enables a building design to earn 1/4 point for using products that have an LCA; 1/2 point for products with a generic EPD (such as the one from SPFA), and 1 point for products using a product-specific EPD from a material supplier.

SPF contractors may now provide copies of the generic SPFA EPD to sustainable building designers to assure proper credit for SPF insulation and roofing materials. The EPD can also be used as general supporting information for customers wanting to use ‘green’ products. The SPFA EPD and related Transparency Briefs for each foam class are now available at no charge from the UL Environments website.
