Kemper System America Inc. offers Wall Guardian FW-100A, a liquid-applied fibered acrylic air barrier that also acts as a water/weather barrier and vapor retarder. Evaluated by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA), it delivers air barrier performance – and value.

Wall Guardian FW-100A exceeds ASTM E2357 (Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage of Air Barrier Assemblies) with an air leakage rate of just 0.0004 cfm/ft2 @ 1.57 psf – 100 times better than the test requirement. Notably, the liquid-applied air barrier exceeded the standard in a single coat at 40 mils wet film thickness.

The engineered system is designed to resist air and water infiltration, saving energy and preventing moisture build-up that can lead to mildew and mold. Compared to house wraps and mechanically-fastened weather barriers, Wall Guardian FW-100A can be applied to building material surfaces with a sprayer, roller or brush.

The liquid-applied air barrier offers unified substrate protection, even on curved or other unconventionally shaped walls. The water-based coating is a low VOC product and meets LEED intent at 25 percent recycled content. The applied coating is also Class A fire rated.

In addition to Wall Guardian FW-100A, Kemper System also offers related air barrier component products through its STS Coatings line acquired in 2016. These include GreatSeal LT-100 polyether Liquid Tape for board-to-board joints, windows, doors, masonry, roof flashings, etc., and UT-40 Universal Tape for sealing cracks, transitions, penetrations and seams in exterior substrate and insulation board.

For over 60 years, Kemper System has been a leader in cold liquid-applied, reinforced roofing and waterproofing, having invented the technology. The company offers a full range of Building Envelope solutions to protect against weather, preserve the integrity of surfaces, and enhance the comfort and value of buildings. This encompasses Wall Guardian fibered acrylic air barrier, Roof Guardian Technologies elastomer-based roof coatings, and HeatBloc-ULTRATM radiant heat barrier. Other brands include COLEAN traffic coating systems, and the company flagship for exterior and interior waterproofing, Kemperol reinforced membrane systems.

Kemper System America Inc. will showcase a range of cold liquid-applied protective solutions for the building envelope at the International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas, March 1-3, and demonstrate product application at booth 217.

Kemper System protects surfaces across the globe. Solutions to be featured at IRE include:

  • Two fully reinforced membrane systems that can transform roof decks into reflective cool roofs, or provide monolithic protection for green roofs, blue roofs, and a range of other projects.
  • Two new coatings systems for protecting surfaces prone to heavy wear such as parking garages, balconies and walkways.

Waterproofing Membrane Systems

The two reinforced waterproofing membrane systems are cold liquid-applied and ideal for cool roof applications:

  • Kemperol AC Speed FR system is a Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)
  • Kemperol Reflect 2K FR is a low-VOC system

Both are fire rated for Class A assemblies and exceed LEED solar reflective requirements with SRI ratings of 108 and 110, respectively.

Durable Wear Coatings

For protecting parking garages, pedestrian decks, and loading docks, the COLEAN Parking System can withstand deterioration caused by natural elements and vehicular traffic. In addition, the COLEAN Balcony System, which is designed to expand and contract with normal structural movements, protects balconies, terraces, walkways, patios, sun decks, and machine rooms from freeze/thaw damage and chemical exposure.

Kemper System America also offers a way to prolong the life of existing roofs with elastomer-based coating systems, one of four technologies added through the acquisition of STS Coatings Inc. in December.

“Our building envelope solutions go beyond roof waterproofing to make the building specifier’s job easier. These solutions create opportunities for contractors and value for building owners,” says Richard Doornink, president and managing director of Kemper System America Inc.

For over 60 years, Kemper System has led in cold-liquid applied, reinforced roofing and waterproofing, having invented the technology and holding the first patents. Today the company offers a range of building envelope solutions to protect against weather, preserve the integrity of surfaces, and enhance the comfort and value of public buildings and commercial real estate.

Kemper System Celebrates 60 Years Building Envelope Solutions

Kemper System is celebrating 60 years of success and building on its strengths to address the entire Building Envelope.

“Kemper System was built on novel approaches to challenges, product quality and customer service, and those continue to be the bedrock of our relationships,” says Richard Doornink, president and managing director of Kemper System America Inc. “Our role is to help architects and other specifiers find the balance between often competing goals on projects across the Building Envelope. The right technology makes those choices easier,” he states.

Today, the company offers an expanded range of Building Envelope solutions to protect against weather, preserve the integrity of surfaces and enhance the comfort and value of public buildings and commercial real estate.

As part of the company’s expansion efforts, Kemper System America acquired STS Coatings Inc. in December along with four flagship brands, and is exploring additional technologies to build its portfolio, Doornink stated. In addition to the technologies from STS Coatings, this encompasses Kemperol reinforced membrane systems, and COLEAN durable coatings systems for protecting surfaces prone to heavy wear.

Technology Roots

Kemper System traces its roots to polymer chemist Heinz B. Kemper, Ph.D., who founded the original company in 1957 after developing a roofing system using a cold liquid-applied resin reinforced with polyester fleece. After conducting over 200 trials, in 1969 he patented Kemperol V210, a reinforced membrane system which proved to be effective, and could stand up to sun, rain, snow, ice and standing water longer term.

That led to further advances in cold, liquid-applied membranes including the company’s flagship solvent-free and odor-free Kemperol 2K PUR membrane system, launched in the U.S. in 1999, and more recently, Kemperol 022 reinforced waterproofing system for indoor tile, and fire-rated Cool Roof systems – the odor-free Kemperol Reflect 2K FR and fast-curing Kemperol AC Speed FR.

Today, Kemper System products protect surfaces under a range of climatic conditions spanning: new and existing roofs, white roofs, green roofs, blue roofs, interior and below-grade waterproofing, parking garages, balconies, terraces, plazas and historic restorations. In North America, Kemperol membrane systems protect projects including the Empire State Building in New York, CN Tower in Toronto and Marketplace Tower in Seattle.

Kemper System America Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kemper System GmbH & Co. (KG | Holländische Straße 32-36 | D-34246 Vellmar). Kemper System is part of the IBG Group of companies, a mid-sized industrial holding company with more than 50 sales and distribution sites, as well as production companies all over the world.

The Kemperol AC Speed FR system from Kemper System America Inc. is a fast-curing, cold liquid-applied cool roof solution with a Solar Reflective Index rating of 108. The system includes a two-part liquid-applied Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) resin and a reinforcing layer; these components form a fully reinforced monolithic membrane. The resin cures in a matter of minutes, and the system does not require a topcoat, which reduces installation time and the cost of labor. In most cases, application can be completed in a day’s time. The fully reinforced membrane system can withstand battering from extreme sunlight, wind and precipitation. It fully adheres to substrates and is self-terminating and self-flashing.

Kemper System Announces Acquisition of STS Coatings Inc.

Kemper System America Inc. announces that it is building on its strength in liquid-applied waterproofing with the acquisition of STS Coatings Inc. and its four major brands to address more than waterproofing across the building envelope.

“Specifiers want to work with suppliers that can solve multiple building envelope challenges, including walls and foundations, and this extends our range,” says Richard Doornink, president and managing director, Kemper System America.

“These brands offer cost-performance advantages, and will continue to be available through existing and new distribution channels, including retail. Liquid-applied products are easy to transport to the jobsite, are economic to install, and can be applied to a variety of surfaces.”

  • Wall Guardian Air Barrier – This spray- or brush-applied water-based liquid air barrier system offers three benefits in one — air barrier, water barrier, and vapor retarder. It is for use in cavity-wall constructions, including CMU/brick veneer, steel stud, insulated (continuous insulation), and insulated tilt-up construction.
  • Roof Guardian Technologies (RGT) – These liquid-applied elastomeric roof coating systems help prolong the life of roofs, including metal, smooth-surfaced BUR, polymer-modified asphalt and single-ply roof systems. The RGT line includes 12 products including two Cool Roof rated systems, and two ENERGY STAR certified systems.
  • HeatBloc Ultra Radiant Barrier – This low-emissivity, water-based (low-e) aluminum coating is engineered for attic spaces. Applied to interior underside of the roof deck, it can block over 80 percent of radiant heat to reduce cooling requirements.
  • GreatSeal Construction Sealants – This premium line of caulks and sealants is used on doors and windows, masonry, roofing and siding. All products in the GreatSeal line are 100 percent solids, with no solvents and very low VOCs, and formulated for performance even in damp, dry or cold conditions down to 40F.

Synergies

“There are synergies with distribution and our existing lines, and we intend to build these in the marketplace,” Doornink states. “For example, Roof Guardian Technologies elastomeric coatings now make us competitive on more building envelope projects with a lower price point. In addition, HeatBloc moves us into retail, which creates a trail for other opportunities.”

Doornink says the news is also in keeping with Kemper System America’s vision for 2020. “We intend to continue growing through strategic acquisitions as we become more than waterproofing for our building products customers.”

Kemper System Is Developing Product Declarations to Meet LEED Requirements

To satisfy new LEED certification requirements for green building construction, Kemper System America Inc. is developing both Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs) for liquid-applied roofing and waterproofing products.

The latest version of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, LEED v4, includes two new transparency elements for Building Product Disclosure and Optimization which can contribute up to four points towards a certification:

  • “Environmental Product Declarations” credits require the use of materials that meet EPD or similar disclosure criteria.
  • “Health Product Declarations” accrue “Material Ingredients Credits” for products that use designated methods to disclose composition to at least 0.1 percent.

To help customers obtain these new LEED certification points, Kemper System is planning to develop EPDs for products beginning in 2017 and issue upon completion; and to issue HPDs for all relevant products by the end of 2017.

Since the LEED rating system was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 1994, it has become a standard in green building certification, and it has adapted to meet the demands of building owners and regulators for transparency and sustainability.

Membrane System Reflects Sunlight to Reduce Impact of IR Rays

Kemperol Reflect 2K FR, a cold, liquid-applied reinforced cool roofing system that can improve building energy efficiency, was introduced by Kemper System America Inc.

The bright white surface helps reflect sunlight and reduce the impact of infrared (IR) rays that can tax building cooling systems.

The easy-to-apply, fully-reinforced membrane is applied the same way as Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent- and odor-free system, but the liquid waterproofing pours out white and dries to a bright white finish. Because no topcoat is necessary, labor costs and installation time are reduced.

The cool roof resin membrane system consists of 70 percent renewable resources, is fire rated for Class-A assemblies, and is odor-free and low-VOC.

Kemperol Reflect 2K FR extends Kemper System’s efforts to support sustainable design. It works for exposed roofs where reflectivity can make a major impact on building energy demands, and it offers many of the same advantages as the Kemperol 2K-PUR system, popular for ‘Green Roofs’ and ‘Blue Roofs’.

The product was tested in Europe and proven valuable on ‘cool roofs’ (also known as ‘white roofs’) especially in warmer climates and areas with above average sunshine.

Both Kemperol systems are also both eligible for LEED credits under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program.

Kemperol membrane systems fully adhere to substrates, and are self-flashing and self-terminating for easy installation and edge-to-edge protection. They can seal roof perimeters, multiple penetrations and virtually any architectural detail, with extended-warranty protection. They are fully reinforced with 165 polyester fleece which absorbs the resin and can achieve proper membrane thickness in a single layer.
