Architectural Shingle Line Features 3M Smog-Reducing Granules

Malarkey Highlander NEX Malarkey Roofing Products, in collaboration with 3M, announces the inclusion of 3M Smog-reducing granules to the Highlander NEX laminated architectural roofing shingle line.

“The Highlander NEX roofing shingle is one of our most innovative and advanced products. Throughout our history, we’ve sought to produce quality roofing products specialized to perform in specific environments. Highlander NEX delivers without being unnecessarily overbuilt,” said Jim Fagan, Chief Executive Officer and President of Malarkey Roofing Products.

According to the company, Highlander NEX is already made with the innovative NEX polymer modified asphalt (previously referred to as Nexgen) and solar reflective granules. With the inclusion of 3M Smog-reducing granules, Highlander NEX is the most sustainably manufactured asphalt roofing shingle in the industry, the company states.

“Sustainability is at the core of our product design,” said Fagan. “We strive to include innovative technologies that improve our environment in all aspects of our operations. Granules that help transform smog gases from the air are certainly in line with that mission.”

Recently launched by the 3M Industrial Mineral Products Division, 3M Smog-reducing Granules help to remove smog pollution (nitrogen oxides or NOx) using roofing shingles. Integrated throughout a shingle’s surface, 3M’s roofing granules are designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating applied to the base mineral. The specialized coating on the granule is activated by the sun’s UV rays, while blending inconspicuously into various shingle color combinations.

As shown in the video, when sunlight hits the shingles containing the smog-reducing granules, radicals are generated and transform nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions improving air quality. This smart solution for pollution mitigation can help communities contribute toward their NOx emission reduction efforts.

The Highlander NEX shingle additionally features Cool roofing granules by 3M. These granules reflect solar rays to cool the roof and home, and can help reduce energy costs. Highlander NEX introductory color offerings will include Weathered Wood, Natural Wood, Heather, Silverwood and Sienna Blend.

Three More Companies Join NRCA’s One Voice Initiative

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) announced that three more companies have recently joined NRCA’s One Voice initiative, upgrading their associate memberships to become “partner members” in the process.
The organizations are Beacon Roofing Supply Inc., Herndon, Virginia; EagleView Technologies Inc., Bothell, Washington; and Malarkey Roofing Products, Portland, Oregon.
In 2017, NRCA launched its One Voice Initiative to unite the roofing industry and speak with one voice about matters critical to the roofing industry’s continued success. To ensure all industry sectors are given an opportunity to participate, NRCA amended its bylaws to allow manufacturers, distributors, architects, engineers, and consultants that choose to participate to become full members of the association, granting them voting rights and eligibility for leadership roles within the association. Previously, such rights were reserved for contractor members only.
“NRCA’s One Voice Initiative offers a unique opportunity for the roofing industry to address the major issues we face. However, our work can only be accomplished with commitments from leaders from all sectors of this great industry,” said Reid Ribble, NRCA’s CEO. “Only together as a roofing community can we take this transformational approach to address our issues and concerns and achieve success in the future.”

Malarkey Roofing Products and the Roofing Industry Bids Farewell to a Friend

On behalf of his family, friends and business associates around the world, the roofing industry is sad to announce the passing of Joe Russo.

Joe’s journey with cancer started one year ago when it was first detected in his brain. He fought through every turn as the disease spread. During this time, Joe continued his work on projects with Malarkey Roofing Products and maintained his unique brand of humor with friends and colleagues. After a courageous fight, Joe’s journey ended in the company of his family.

Joe Russo’s story in the roofing industry would take pages to document. His career started on the roof, first as a shingler, then hot crew, foreman, superintendent, estimator, consultant, technical manager, and sales manager. All of his experiences knit together to apply to any given circumstance in a roofing conversation.

Joe enjoyed travel and was able to visit all contents of the world, including a jaunt to Antarctica to cross off the final continent. His wife Jackie was able to join him on many of the experiences and was by his side through many spirited Russo dinner table debates.

We will miss our friend but remember his courage and appreciate his joy for life.
