GAF Acquires Quest Construction Products

GAF announced it has completed the acquisition of Quest Construction Products (QCP), a former division of Quest Specialty Chemicals and a supplier of fluid-applied roofing systems and roof-coating products in North America. The transaction, which also provides GAF with a strong presence in coating solutions for pavement and vertical surfaces, is expected to accelerate the robust growth of GAF’s commercial business.

QCP brings excellent brands and product lines to GAF including the Hydro-Stop family of liquid membrane products, the United Coatings line of coating solutions, and the StreetBond pavement coatings. The acquisition instantly gives GAF a position in a high-tech, environmentally friendly, and economically efficient segment of the commercial roofing business.

QCP’s strategically positioned geographic footprint and unique technical expertise in the field will provide GAF with additional solutions to bring to its customers. QCP’s products have gained rapid acceptance in the marketplace due largely to their reflectivity, ease of application, and energy-efficiency. These highly practical and effective products will complement GAF’s existing offerings of roofing technologies and commercial solar solutions.

“This acquisition combines a North American manufacturer and marketer of roofing products with a producer of fluid-applied solutions,” says Bob Tafaro, president and CEO of GAF. “We have acquired excellent brands and will provide an enhanced platform for their growth. QCP’s differentiated and innovative products will also boost our commercial business’s competitive advantage by offering a broader range of solutions to the market. We are empowering our contractors with the products they need to grow their businesses while strengthening our relationships with strategic building owners.”

“This acquisition demonstrates GAF’s ongoing commitment to growth and leadership in the commercial roofing industry. It is in keeping with the extraordinary investments we have made and continue to make to add capacity and gain share in commercial solutions such as insulation (ISO), TPO, and PVC single-ply membranes. We know that the QCP team will further enrich our culture of achievement, and we look forward to working together on a smooth integration.”

RCMA Awards Members and Announces Appointees to Board of Directors

The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA), the international trade association representing manufacturers of cold-applied coatings and cements used for roofing and waterproofing and suppliers of industry products, held its 2015 annual meeting in New Orleans.

In addition to featuring association activity updates and a panel discussion of industry experts, this meeting was an opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions of two RCMA members with industry awards and to announce two new appointees to the RCMA Board of Directors.

The RCMA Industry Statesman Award, recently renamed the James “Tim” Nelligan Industry Statesman Award in memory of a longtime RCMA member, was awarded to Steve Heinje. Heinje, technical service manager for Quest Construction Products, is an active and dedicated RCMA member; he serves as the association’s vice president, is a member of the RCMA Board of Directors, and co-chairs both the Sustainability Task Force and the Codes and Standards Task Force.

The James “Tim” Nelligan Industry Statesman Award is not awarded every year, but rather is an award that is presented when deemed appropriate to acknowledge a member’s special efforts on behalf of the RCMA in advancing the mission of the roof coatings industry. The late James Tim Nelligan, the award’s namesake, was active in the coatings industry and played an integral part in the creation of the RCMA back in 1982. He started his career in the roofing industry at Owens Corning, served as president of Henry Co., and would go on to start his own reflective roof coatings business, United Cool Roof Systems. The RCMA recognized Tim’s leadership and contributions to the industry by awarding him with the Martin A. Davis Award in 1995, and later honored him with the very same Industry Statesman Award in 2011.

The RCMA’s Martin A. Davis Award, first presented in 1985, is the highest honor bestowed by RCMA. Named for one of RCMA’s founding members, this award recognizes outstanding service and significant contributions to the roof coatings industry. At its Annual Meeting, RCMA awarded the 2015 Martin A. Davis Award to Jeff Blank. Blank, vice president of research and development and purchasing at SR Products, served as president of the RCMA from 2012-13. He has been an active member in RCMA, serving on the board of directors for 14 years, and contributes his expertise to various committees and task forces.

During the meeting, the RCMA members approved the proposed board of directors slate. John Stubblefield, Polyglass USA, was selected to fill a regular member seat, and Steve Hollman, Univar USA Inc., will fill an associate member seat on RCMA’s Board of Directors. The terms for Stubblefield and Hollman begin in 2015 and expire in 2018. The RCMA thanked the two outgoing members of the board of directors, Debra Light and Jon Shaffer, for their time and dedication during their terms as board members.

Quest Construction Products Is Trademark Licensee of Kynar Aquatec Coating Technology

Arkema Inc. is pleased to announce that Quest Construction Products is now a trademark licensee of Kynar Aquatec high-performance coating technology in North America. Quest Construction Products uses Kynar Aquatec technology as the basis for its Kymax brand of protective coatings for new or existing roof surfaces.

“While we have a long history of partnering with Quest Construction Products on their high-quality Kymax coatings, it gives us great pleasure to welcome them as an official licensee of Kynar Aquatec,” said Vince Casmirri, marketing manager of architectural coatings at Arkema Inc. “Our licensing program is a key component of our strategy to provide customers the support and innovative technology they need to succeed, and we are pleased with the outstanding recognition that Kymax coatings has achieved in the cool white roof market.”

Kynar Aquatec is an innovative platform of emulsions for producing premium water-based coatings with low VOC levels below 100 grams/liter. Coatings formulated with these emulsions can provide the durability and performance of traditional Kynar 500 resin-based coatings and can easily be applied to a variety of substrates, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete, textiles and previously painted surfaces. Given their low-VOC waterborne character, excellent durability and weatherability, and ability to be formulated with IR reflective pigments for lasting building efficiency, the Kynar Aquatec emulsions offer sustainable coating solutions for a wide variety of building requirements.

“We are extremely pleased to have been selected as an official trademark licensee of Kynar Aquatec latex,” said Michelle Carlin, product manager at Quest Construction Products. “This program provides a growth platform for strong brand owners in the architectural roof coatings market by capitalizing on the proven success of Kynar Aquatec technology by Arkema.”

Kymax coatings are manufactured using Kynar Aquatec emulsions to deliver the proven durability and performance of traditional Kynar PVDF coatings. However, rather than requiring high-temperature baking, they are air-dry finishes that cure at ambient temperatures. Designed as a liquid applied roofing product over new or existing roofs, Kymax provides the ultimate in reflectivity, color stability, algae resistance and weatherability. It is also certified to meet ENERGY STAR, Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), LEED and California Title 24 reflectance and emissivity criteria.
