Owens Corning Roofing’s Imagine.Style.Win. Contest Helps Consumers Get Inspired With Shingle Color

Some roofing conversations are more challenging than others. Color is a good example. While roof warranties, wind resistance and ventilation are topics most contractors can talk about with ease, few roofing contractors look forward to venturing into the color selection discussion. After all, color is personal. Thus, it can become easy for roofing contractors to “play it safe” and suggest a neutral shingle color when a homeowner asks for a color recommendation, missing out on the opportunity to utilize shingle color as a design element.

In 2016, Owens Corning Roofing launched the Shingle Color of the Year initiative, highlighting shingle color as a way to express a homeowner’s personal style. The Toledo-based manufacturer also introduced online inspiration and visualization tools to help homeowners virtually experiment with different colors on their home’s roof.

Now, Owens Corning Roofing is encouraging homeowners to share their color inspirations in the Imagine.Style.Win. contest. Through August 15, 2019, consumers can submit a mood board and enter to win an all-expense paid trip for two to Indianapolis that includes a color consultation with home renovation and design experts, Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak of the HGTV series, “Good Bones” and owners of Two Chicks and a Hammer. Along with the color consultation, the grand prize winner will receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic Indianapolis Bates-Hendricks neighborhood conducted by a member of the Two Chicks and a Hammer team. The neighborhood is featured in many of the Good Bones episodes. Karen and Mina previously teamed up with Owens Corning Roofing to help promote roofing color and developed an online videooffering practical tips for building mood boards.

As contest entrants create their exterior mood boards, they can use the Owens Corning Roofing online inspiration and visualization toolsto explore shingle colors, coordinate shingles with other exterior accents and express their personal style. In addition to the Grand Prize trip to Indianapolis, Owens Corning Roofing will award one First Prize package that includes a $500 cash prize and an exclusive Owens Corning tote bag filled with Two Chicks and a Hammer swag. Owens Corning Roofing will award 100 Second Prizewinners an exclusive tote filled with Two Chicks and a Hammer swag.

“We developed the Shingle Color of the Year initiative to inspire homeowners to think about roof color as way to tie a home’s exterior together,” said Sue Burkett, strategic marketing manager at Owens Corning. She notes the initiative is particularly targeted toward women. “We know that women are key influencers when it comes to color and style inside and outside the home,” says Burkett. “We are particularly honored to have received the Women’s Choice Award for Most Recommended Roofing Products for the second consecutive year. We are the #1 choice in America for roofing products by women—and that’s really saying something with a design savvy audience.”

The Imagine. Style. Win. Competition is open through August 15. Contest details and information on entering are available at www.imaginestylewin.com.

Owens Corning Introduces 2019 Shingle Color of the Year

Owens Corning introduces Black Sable as the 2019 Shingle Color of the Year. As the newest addition to the Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Designer Colors Collection series, Black Sable was inspired by color trends as well as feedback from homeowners, contractors and builders. “Black Sable provides a modern take on a classic color, making a sophisticated and timeless statement,” says Sue Burkett, Owens Corning Roofing Strategic Roofing Manager. “You could say this shingle is the ‘little black dress’ for the roof because it will never go out of style.”

As a twist to conventional monochromatic black palettes, Black Sable is a dark and intensely rich blend that uses classic black granules mixed with gray, umber and sable tones. The result is a dramatic yet grounded color complementing any number of architectural styles and exterior color palettes. “This is a new go-to color in roofing,” says Burkett. “Many people have asked me, ‘is the shingle black or brown?’ and my answer is ‘both’. Black Sable addresses a specific color gap we found in the market.”

The Shingle Color of the Year initiative highlights the roof as a design element expressing a homeowner’s personal style and enhancing a home’s curb appeal. “Research has shown that homeowners, especially women, embrace color and want guidance on how to use it on their homes’ exteriors,” Burkett says. Each year, Owens Corning introduces new online exterior style boards and other design and visualization resources to help. Three new style boards featuring Black Sable are supporting the product launch. These “design and inspire” tools are particularly popular with women. In 2018, Owens Corning earned the 2018 Women’s Choice Award as America’s most recommended roofing products.

HGTV’s “Good Bones” home renovation and design experts Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak–renowned for their use of color as an exterior design element–announced the launch of Black Sable in a Facebook video. Laine and Starsiak have helped Owens Corning spread the message about color and curb appeal since the company announced its inaugural Shingle Color of the Year in 2017.  Black Sable becomes the third Owens Corning Shingle Color of the Year following Sand Dune in 2018 and Sedona Canyon in 2017. It will be available nationally in January, 2019. More information can be found at www.shinglecoloroftheyear.com.

Owens Corning announced that Sand Dune has been chosen as the 2018 Shingle Color of the Year.

Owens Corning announced that Sand Dune has been chosen as the 2018 Shingle Color of the Year.

Owens Corning announced Sand Dune as the 2018 Shingle Color of the Year. HGTV “Good Bones” home renovation experts Karen E Laine and Mina Starsiak – renowned for their use of color as a design element – helped unveil the selection and shared their perspectives on the power of color to inspire home exteriors.

Owens Corning launched the annual roofing color initiative to highlight the roof as a design element that expresses a homeowner’s personal style and contributes to curb appeal. Sand Dune was chosen for its versatile medley of hues embedded in the color, and for how it complements a broad range of exteriors to create a sense of relaxed, natural grandeur.

“Combining elements of bisque beige and light sky blue with hues of driftwood, charcoal and shale creates a canvas of elegance that enhances today’s exterior colors and styles,” said Sue Burkett, Owens Corning Roofing Strategic Marketing Manager.

The versatile shingle color has been endorsed by remodeling experts. Home renovator Starsiak shared her perspective on the appeal of Sand Dune. “It’s no secret that we love using color in and on our homes,” Starsiak said. “We’ve used Owens Corning shingles in the color Sand Dune on our home office and think the fun and bright color is complementary to multiple palettes.”

Complementing the announcement of Sand Dune as the 2018 Shingle Color of the Year, the Owens Corning website offers free, online design tools and visualization resources to help consumers color coordinate their home’s roof and exterior. Resources include a “Design and Inspire” section featuring several style boards, including three new boards created in collaboration with Good Bones’ stars Laine and Starsiak. The newly enhanced Design EyeQ® Roof Visualization Experience is a free tool that allows homeowners to upload a photo of their home and experiment with different color pairings. The mobile-friendly site also includes a series of pre-rendered home images with multiple shingle colors and styles.

“Homeowners – especially women – have told us they are looking for alternatives to traditional roof colors,” said Burkett. “The online style boards and interactive tools available on our website make it easy for homeowners to express their personal style using the TruDefinition® Duration® Designer shingle in Sand Dune, or one of the many other shingle colors available through Owens Corning.

Beyond aesthetic appeal, as part of the Duration shingle series, Sand Dune incorporates the advanced technology and performance of patented SureNail Technology. Part of the TruDefinition Duration Designer Colors collection, Sand Dune becomes the second shingle designated as the Owens Corning Shingle Color of the Year. The 2017 color was Sedona Canyon.
