Sno Gem Inc., a snow-retention system manufacturer, introduces the Sno Barricade TPO and PVC Membrane Deck Mount Bar snow-retention system. It is a membrane-coated and pre-skirted continuous-bar snow system (patent-pending) for new construction or retrofit applications.

The base plates are custom-coated in either TPO or PVC with a standard white, gray or black. Custom colors are available to match the roofing membrane. To ensure an easy installation, Sno Barricade Membrane-Coated Diamond Series System is available with a pre-skirted target patch, heat-welded directly to the TPO- or PVC-coated base plate. Installers can heat-weld Sno Gem’s target patch to the membrane of the roof, reducing labor cost on a watertight system.

Sno Barricade Systems are available in 1- or 2-inch bar size with single, double or triple bar retention. Square or round bars are offered to best match a building’s aesthetics. The Sno Barricade Plate, an accessory to the system that prevents snow and ice from sliding under the bars, is available in mill finish or custom colors.

Choose between a 1- or 2-inch bar, available in standard mill finish aluminum or painted in a powder coating or Kynar finish. Sno Blockade fastens to almost any standing-seam metal roof system, employing the company’s WaveLock technology with three points of attachment without penetration, in conjunction with the Sno Blockade clamp. To reduce melting snow and ice from sliding underneath the bar, the company offers the Blockade Plate, which is installed on the upslope side of the bar. The standard Blockade Plate width is 3 inches but custom sizes are available.

Providing a safe and healthy environment for students is clearly a high-ranking consideration in the construction of an elementary school. Architects for the Alton Hall Elementary School in Galloway, Ohio, recognized the need for snow retention and specified the Sno Barricade from Sno Gem Inc. to be attached to the standing-seam roof.

“We specified the Sno Barricade because of its proven durability and performance,” says Mike Parkinson, associate project manager at SHP Leading Design of Cincinnati. “We’ve used the Sno Barricade on dozens of projects. I can’t remember the last time it wasn’t on one of our projects. The system is designed specifically for each project by Sno Gem. With the design criteria, they run calculations for the project and prescribed a two-rail system around the entire roof to protect the occupants from potential sliding snow and ice.”

With a layout of the standing-seam metal roof, considering slope, length of run, panel width, annual snowfall and other factors, Sno Gem calculates the best snow-retention solution. “Every metal roofing layout is different and each one requires its own calculations,” notes Jim Carpenter, vice president of Operations at Sno Gem. “Our calculations are based on results obtained from extensive testing of our clamps.”

For the Alton Hall Elementary School, the Sno Barricade was prescribed by Sno Gem. Rush Architectural Metal Erectors Inc. of Washington, Pa., installed 1,850 linear feet of the Sno Barricade around 100 percent of the perimeter of the building. R.A.M.E. also installed the Barricade Plate on Alton Hall. The Barricade Plate is an accessory designed to hold back thinner amounts of ice and snow that could pass beneath the bar. The Barricade Plate is installed on the upslope side of the bar in the middle of the panel. It’s held in place by a tek screw, not visible from the ground. Like the Sno Barricade, the Barricade Plate is available in a color to match any roofing panels.

Sno Gem Inc. has introduced the PV Cube standing-seam attachment system, a clamp-to-seam solar-panel racking and mounting system that provides strength through patent-pending WaveLock technology with three points of attachment. Four PV Cube profiles—PV Cube, PV Cube Wide, PV Cube Mini and PV Cube Zip—accommodate virtually any standing-seam metal roof. Silver Bullet set screws include a rounded bullet tip to maximize strength, but do not damage the paint finish or pierce the seam, meaning they won’t void warranties. All are constructed of aircraft-grade aluminum extrusion.

Sno Gem Celebrates 20th Anniversary

As Sno Gem Inc. celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2014, it is an opportunity to reflect on its journey from start-up to the forefront of the snow retention industry.

Like many businesses, Sno Gem was born out of necessity. The Smeja family had founded Metalmaster Sheet Metal Inc. in 1977, which was growing into one of the largest commercial sheet metal and roofing businesses in the industry. They came to realize there were few snow guard manufacturers, to meet the increasing demand for snow retention products, and for integration into the roofs they were consistently installing. “The roofing business was growing and they were doing a large portion of the work in the Chicagoland area,” says James T. Carpenter, Vice President of Operations at Sno Gem. “The business was consistently buying snow guards for their projects and at one point, the Smeja family made the decision to design their own snow guard.”

The Sno Gem “Original” Polycarbonate design was the initial snow guard product developed by the company. With the Smeja family incurring decades of combined architectural sheet metal experience, it was essential to create this snow guard to have a large base for securement and attachment, that’s when the 25 square-inch base was created, which was more than any other snow guard found within the industry. This meant additional surface area to bond to the roof panel with, and thus, creating increased attachment strength per unit. Another similar product offering was the Sno Gem Junior Polycarbonate design. This is a snow guard with a 12.5 square-inch bonding surface and a narrower base. The design of the Junior model was ideal for metal panel systems, with intermediate ribs, and/or corrugated metal panels which are more common with pre-engineered metal buildings and post-frame building systems and designs.

“The Smejas are an innovative and business-minded family,” Carpenter says. “Early profits were directly invested back into the company and they consistently increased their marketing budgets by advertising in more trade publications and attending industry trade shows. These efforts increased market awareness of all of the Sno Gem products, for consumers, architects and contractors.”

Sno Gem has consistently been quick to react to the latest in consumer demands, industry trends and has developed snow retention systems for slate, shingle and membrane roofing since their inception. The Sno Barricade was Sno Gem’s first bar snow retention system for standing seam metal roofing applications and is now one of the company’s most popular systems. The Sno Barricade can be finished in either a powder coating application, or with a Kynar finish to match any roof panel finish and color.

More recent innovations include the iClad and Sno Blockade snow retention systems, both are bar/fence systems made of aircraft-grade aluminum extrusions. These designs are compatible with most standing seam metal roofing systems currently on the market. These innovative products draw their strength from Sno Gem’s unique attachment design of the patent-pending WaveLock Technology. WaveLock Technology features three or five points of attachment and is designed to maximize the system’s strength, without piercing, marring, or penetrating the roof panel, or its finish. Sno Gem also recently introduced the PV Cube, a clamp-to-seam solar panel racking and mounting system attachment product, which also employs the same patent-pending WaveLock Technology.

iClad is an innovative system that attaches to the standing seam with the company’s Sno Cube clamp. It attaches to virtually any standing seam metal roofing profile with WaveLock technology, unique and stronger due to the fact that it provides three points of attachment without penetration. Sno Cube’s Silver Bullet set screws include a rounded “bullet” tip to maximize strength without compromising the paint finish or the material.

The iClad and iClad-S offer a 2- or 3-inch-high profile and can accommodate any pre-finished metal trim to match the color of your standing seam metal roof panel.

The iClad system is available in standard mill finish aluminum, allowing contractors to keep the product in stock, avoiding construction delays. Once installed, it’s easy to attach the pre-finished metal trim from the material that was used to install the roofing panels onto the face of the iBeam to produce an aesthetically pleasing and effective snow retention system that matches the standing seam metal roof.
