DaVinci Roofscapes Recycles 820,000 Pounds of Waste

Efficient operations, new blending systems and a dedicated focus on the environment allowed DaVinci Roofscapes to recycle 820,000 pounds of composite scrap in 2017. The excess shake and slate roofing tiles were crushed, then ground down and used to create starter tiles for the roofing company.

“The big story this past year is that our company molded 30 percent more pounds of roofing tiles than in 2016 while simultaneously reducing our scrap by 242,000 pounds over the past year,” says Bryan Ward, vice president of operations at DaVinci Roofscapes in Lenexa, Kan. “This is a terrific achievement when considering Earth Day and our companies’ dedicated commitment to the environment.

“We were able to advance production while reducing scrap by enhancing our recycling efforts. Searching for ways to reduce waste is a full-time dedicated endeavor at our company.”

Thanks in part to an investment in a new blending system, which makes manufacturing operations more efficient, the team at DaVinci Roofscapes sold zero scrap to outside firms in 2017.

“It’s very significant that we were able to recycle and reuse 100 percent of all scrap items at our facility last year,” says Ward. “In 2016 we transferred 567,000 pounds of scrap to an outside end-user who makes pallets, crates and totes. That’s a great use for the product because it doesn’t end up in landfills. However, in 2017 our company was able to keep every pound of scrap in-house and reuse it for our own products. That’s a significant achievement.”

DaVinci Roofscapes continues to meet their goal of zero scrap going into landfills. The industry’s leading composite shake and slate manufacturer produces polymer slate and shake roofing tiles in 49 standard colors, plus custom colors.

Each time the manufacturing operation changes color runs, there is a transitioning between colors.  Those transition tiles are “off spec,” cannot be used and are recycled. The tiles — which are 100 percent recyclable — are segregated by color and then ground up and molded into starter shingles, which are generally unseen on the roof.

“Every year we take stock on Earth Day to evaluate the progress of our recycling operations and share the good news about our enhanced efforts,” says Ward. “Our manufacturing operation continues to become more efficient each year.

“The fact that we increased manufacturing production of roofing tiles in 2017 while substantially decreasing the amount of scrap generated is a huge accomplishment. We’re on a path toward continually making our operations more efficient, which is great for the environment.”

Zinc Tiles Make Roof the Focal Point of Historic Residential Renovation

Prior to its near-total reconstruction, the Jett Residence was an overgrown structure hidden in a grove of trees in Iowa City, Iowa. The strikingly renovated cottage now serves as a retreat house for its owners. Originally built in 1853, the residence retains a significant portion of the original, locally made red brick. An original, vaulted stone root cellar — rumored to have been part of the Underground Railroad — also remains on the property.

The owners were deeply involved in working with Neumann Monson Architects, Iowa City, in planning the renovation, according to co-owner Bobby Jett. The interior design of the 1,870-square-foot cottage offers a highly contemporary flair within the historic setting.

The most prominent feature of the exterior is the roof. “Everyone loves the roof,” Jett says. “They’ve never seen anything like it.” Approximately 2,500 square feet of RHEINZINK Square Tiles were utilized. The 0.8mm prePATINA blue-grey Square Tiles were installed in a diamond pattern.

The selection of the tiles was inspired by an old black and white photo of the house taken more half a century ago. “At that time, the roof of the house had diamond-shaped shingles. We wanted to replicate that look,” notes Jett. “The architect suggested that RHEINZINK could provide the look and durability we wanted.”

“We definitely wanted to replicate the roof’s visual pattern that we saw in the old photo but obviously wanted it to have more permanence and durability,” says Tim Schroeder, vice president at Neumann Monson Architects. “We’ve worked with zinc before and thought it would be a good complement to the dormers that would provide a nice crisp appearance. The RHEINZINK was definitely a nod to the historic element but provided a progressive look as well.”

Fabrication of the Square Tiles was done by RHEINZINK systems partner Sheet Metal Supply (SMS), headquartered in Mundelein, Illinois.

Installation of the RHEINZINK Square Tiles was performed by Natural Metal Associates, Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. The owner of Natural Metal Associates, Lou Rondeau, has extensive hands-on experience with zinc fabrication methods and techniques. “I knew this was a unique project and I really wanted to be a part of it,” Rondeau notes. Rondeau was accompanied by an apprentice and personally did the hand-cutting and folding associated with detailing the valleys and edges. The work also included installation of the RHEINZINK half-round 5 ½-inch gutter system.

The installation was completed in nine days, according to Rondeau. “Zinc is a premium material that’s a real pleasure to work with,” he says.

Varied substrates comprise roofing materials, and contractors need a roofing sealant sufficiently versatile to adhere to as many of them as possible. Now, they have one, with the introduction of Titebond Roof Plus Sealant.

Titebond developed its newest roof sealant for a wide variety of roofing applications, such as metal trim, solar roof systems, architectural metals, painted metals, aluminum and general roofing projects. It provides excellent adhesion to a range of substrates: shingle and tiled roofs, sheet roofing, metal roofs, wood forms, flashings, edge and ridge tiles and liquid applied roofs. In addition, contractors can apply the sealant in temperatures from 20 F to 100 F, advancing its status as a great all-around roof sealant.

Titebond develops its adhesives and sealants with the professional contractor in mind, so it’s no surprise that its newest sealant offers performance characteristics that will appeal to the pro – and, by extension, the skilled DIYer. Beyond the wide application temperature range, Roof Plus can speed up application, increasing contractor productivity. The ready-to-use formula requires no messy, time-consuming mixing; the contractor simply inserts the cartridge in the gun and tools for quicker application and neater joints. It easily fills properly prepared joints one-quarter to two-inches wide. In addition, its clear formulation blends with most substrates – although the contractor can paint it with any non-rigid paint within just two hours.

However quick the application time, when cured, Titebond Roof Plus Sealant is an extremely long-lasting, supple sealant. It provides a weather-tight seal with 560 percent elongation and 25 percent total joint movement. The contractor can leave the job site confident that the sealant will meet high performance standards.

The newest Titebond sealant also complies with ASTM C-920 Type S Grade NS Class 12.5 Use T, NT, M, A and O; Federal Specification TTS-00230C Type II Class B; and SCAQMD Rule #1168.
