Attendees of the N.Y. Building Envelope Symposium witnessed how to turn a roof into a reflective Cool Roof with a new odor-free membrane from Kemper System.

The first New York Building Envelope Symposium sponsored by Kemper System America, Inc. drew about 50 top consultants and specifiers to a one-day educational forum at the 101 Club on Park Avenue in New York, Nov. 16. Sponsored in partnership with ZinCo USA and KEIM Mineral Coatings of America, the symposium featured presentations on: Green Roof technology, Performance standards for air barriers, Blue Roofs & stormwater management, Mineral silicate finishes for masonry and concrete, and Inspections for liquid-applied roofing and waterproofing membranes.

“The roots of our success are here in New York, so we wanted to give back with a co-sponsored event that would allow participants to network and learn from multiple perspectives,” said Richard Doornink, President and Managing Director, Kemper System America. “ZinCo, KEIM and Kemper are all complementary systems.”

Qualified attendees are also eligible for continuing education (CE) credits from the American Institute of Architects, U.S. Green Building Council, and RCI.

“CE credits are helpful, but the main reason I attend is to learn what’s new and to stay up-to-date on materials, systems and code requirements for the building envelope,” said Kevin Bone, Principal of Bone Levine Architects. The New York City-based firm has extensive experience in architectural and structural upgrades, building additions, exterior envelope design and
maintenance, and historic preservation. The firm also has realized numerous award-winning designs for modest residential projects and is well known for its research on the city’s water infrastructure.

Presenter Nicholas Smith, National Account Manager of ZinCo USA, commented: “We received a lot of positive feedback from attendees, including those at various stages of green roof design.” The consulting firm has been involved on several of the same green roof projects as Kemper System in New York and beyond. “High-rise urban environments are especially
challenging for green roofs, so you have to design them properly if you expect long-term performance,” he said.

Presenting for Kemper System was National Design & Specification Manager Brian Kelly, CSI CDT, LEED Green Associate. Presenting for KEIM Mineral Coatings of America were Technical Sales Executive Anthony Truppi and Technical Field Specialist Perri Robinson.
