In Central Texas, where metal roofing is common and weather can be unforgiving, one residence made an impression not because of scale but because of shape: a geodesic dome whose triangular facets were clad with interlocking steel shingles so precisely executed the roof reads as sculpture. Green Knight Metal Roofing handled the entire installation, translating a complex geometry into a seamless, long-lasting finish.
“This roof pushed our team to think differently about layout and attachment,” says Joel Kenty, CEO of Green Knight Metal Roofing. “It demanded exacting measurements, thoughtful detailing, and an attitude that accepts no shortcuts.”
Engineering a Unique Form
The geodesic dome wasn’t built from inspiration—it already existed, decades earlier. The homeowner, a second owner of the property, sought a roofing solution that could withstand future hail events while honoring the structure’s unique geometry. The roof’s triangular panels created a hexagonal pattern, which ruled out standing seam solutions. Instead, a single-course steel shingle became the practical and aesthetic choice.
“The prior aluminum roof had served its time but was damaged in a hailstorm,” Kenty explains. “Steel offered strength, durability, and flexibility for the dome’s angles. And only a flat-profile, single-course shingle could conform to the geometry.”
The team carefully considered every aspect of the installation, from edge treatments to fastener placement. “Each triangle had to be evaluated individually,” Kenty notes. “It wasn’t enough to replicate a standard pattern—we had to adapt each shingle to its exact position to maintain both waterproofing and a visually continuous surface.”
Material Selection and Customization

After evaluating multiple options, the team selected Kassel & Irons’ KasselWood steel shingles in a custom teak finish. Standard colors didn’t meet the client’s vision, so Kenty worked with the manufacturer to powder-coat samples. The homeowner, who was very detail-oriented, took their time to evaluate and become comfortable with many samples until a final choice was made. The coating added a textured, wood-like finish while ensuring resistance to sun, impact, and moisture.
“The surface looks curved, but it’s actually a series of small flat sections,” Kenty notes. “Aligning the shingles perfectly across triangles was a challenge, but careful layout planning allowed us to achieve a seamless visual effect.”
The finish was chosen not only for aesthetics but also for durability. Its textured surface minimized glare, gave the steel a natural wood appearance, and provided long-term protection against weathering.
Precision through Planning
Meticulous layout work guided the installation. Each shingle’s dimensions and cuts were mapped before crews stepped on the roof, eliminating guesswork and ensuring watertight performance. With a roof spanning three connected sections, teams coordinated to maintain alignment and visual consistency, while steep slopes required harnesses, ropes, and custom rigging for safety.
“Experience was critical,” Kenty says. “All our installers are metal roofing specialists. Their knowledge of steel and Kassel & Irons products allowed us to tackle a project that others might have deemed impossible.”
The installation also involved careful logistical planning. Old roofing materials were sorted for recycling or disposal, demonstrating the team’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices. Crews ensured that every piece of old aluminum was properly processed, minimizing landfill impact.
Performance Meets Artistry
Beneath the shingles, the roof was protected with a thick self-adhered underlayment by Continental Materials Secure Grip Max HT 2.0, self-adhered synthetic underlayment, providing superior waterproofing for the complex geometry. The structure required no ventilation, simplifying design decisions. Fastening followed the manufacturer’s specifications, ensuring both durability and aesthetics.
“While this was a first-of-its-kind application for the product, careful planning and expert installation ensured flawless results,” Kenty adds.
Beyond the technical challenges, the project showcased the artistry of metal roofing. Each triangle’s lines were intentionally aligned, every seam carefully placed, and the overall roof designed to appear sculptural from every angle. The result is a roof that is both functional and visually striking.
A Roof Built to Inspire
The completed dome blends innovation, precision, and artistry. The homeowner’s vision was fully realized, with a roof that resists hail, reduces maintenance, and offers lasting performance. Locally, the project stands out as a testament to careful planning and expert craftsmanship.
“Most of our work is standard metal roofing,” Kenty explains, “but projects like this demonstrate what’s possible when skill, creativity, and experience come together. It’s a legacy piece that shows clients the heights we can reach.”
