The Shore Pines Assisted Living Community, dedicated to serving elderly residents with great care and dignity, needed the assistance of a trusted contractor. The facility, located in the town of Gold Beach on Oregon’s southern coast, experienced severe roof damage from record-breaking winter storms in late 2022 and early 2023.
Shore Pines provides the highest level of well-being, comfort, security, and compassionate assistance to its 43 residents. Temporary repairs to address the damage, then preparation for a complete roof replacement, were critical to the facility’s ongoing operations.
The winter storms caused extensive leaking on the roof, including at nearly all the ridge vented sections, as well as under the shingles where the wind had lifted older material secured by fasteners rusted out from exposure to the coastal air.
The project was completed by Mattern Tribby Construction, LLC, based in Brookings, Oregon. Owned by Thomas Fristed and Gunner Mattern, Mattern Tribby is a family-oriented company with 11 employees focused primarily on residential and small commercial projects.
“We serve our customers as if they were our family, and many of our customers become just that,” said Fristed. “We are a service company that loves roofing so it’s not unusual for our roofing projects to evolve into fort building, sunroom designing, and landscaping projects, and in the case of Shore Pines, preparation of insurance paperwork.”
The contractor worked closely with the Shore Pines staff to thoroughly document the damage and assisted in the completion of extensive paperwork, as well as the gathering of evidence, including hundreds of pictures. Ultimately, Mattern Tribby helped secure approval for the full claim amount from Shore Pines’ insurance provider. Mattern Tribby also installed temporary coverings over the ridge cap with lathe and screws to minimize any additional damage before permanent repairs were able to begin.
The New Roof

The building’s permanent repair required more than 450 squares of asphalt shingles. Mattern Tribby recommended its go-to brand of shingles, Paramount in Antique Black from PABCO Roofing Products. The top-of-the-line Paramount open-tooth, architectural shingle was selected for the exceptional protection it provides for coastal structures.
Due to the salt air, the new roof was installed with all stainless-steel fasteners, stainless-steel flashing, and stainless nails. Mattern Tribby upgraded the underlayment with a full ice and water shield, and almost 200 sheets of 3/4-inch plywood were installed to replace the damaged sheeting. A new ridge vent and replacement pipe boots were installed to deliver maximum performance and longevity. Because there was a shortage of valley metal during the project, the contractor fashioned the necessary components from rolled metal purchased in Washington state. In all, the project was completed faster than anticipated — in just five weeks — thanks to Shore Pines allowing the Mattern Tribby team to work over weekends and the 4th of July holiday.
Because the facility was occupied during the installation, the Mattern Tribby team had to be extremely careful with equipment, materials, and project refuse. Residents needed to continue using building entrances and exits, as well as the surrounding grounds to get fresh air and exercise during the project. Located on Oregon’s coast, Shore Pines is buffeted by heavy winds coming off the Pacific Ocean. It was important that Mattern Tribby keep the workspace exceedingly tidy so that materials weren’t blown onto the walking paths and outdoor living areas used by residents.
The end result was a strikingly attractive roof that visually complemented the building and its surroundings. The quality of the overall installation will protect the structure and its residents for years to come, even in the harsh Pacific Coast environment of Gold Beach, Oregon.
“Mattern Tribby did outstanding work, from helping us file the insurance claim through completion of the new roof,” says Holly Bendtzen, executive director of Shore Pines Assisted Living Community. “The new roof looks fantastic, and we have the confidence that the installation will be able to withstand the beautiful but often brutal coastal environment of western Oregon.”
