DaVinci Roofscapes Offers Webinar on Business-Building Tips for Roofers

DaVinci Roofscapes, a division of Westlake Royal Building Products, has sponsored a webinar entitled “How to Incorporate Composite Roofing Into Your Business.” Available for free on RoofersCoffeeShop, the expansive presentation explores how alternative roofing products help roofers grow their sales.

“We keep our business growing by recommending alternative roofing products like DaVinci,” says Chad Janisch with Shake Guys in Illinois, on the webinar. “We install about 100 composite shake roofs a year in the Chicagoland area. Most of these result from severe weather events.”

According to Janisch, composite shakes are a “one and done” type of replacement. Homeowners appreciate they have all the features that real wood shakes do not. The resistance to fire, impact and high winds are especially appealing.

“Safety is, of course, a primary reason to select realistic-looking DaVinci tiles,” says Janisch. “However, after that, homeowners start relating that their old shake roof was a maintenance nightmare. Curling, splitting and breaking of shakes. Yearly treatments. Insect infestations. When they learn that composites resist all these problems, they’re sold.”

The webinar also includes insights from roofer Scott Kim, President and Owner of WGM Contracting, servicing Arlington, Virginia. Kim relates that there’s an untapped market for composites in his marketplace. His company is ready to fill the need. Just six months after opening his own business, Kim’s team has already installed five DaVinci projects. Homeowners appreciate the curb appeal, long-term maintenance-free product, and year-after-year discount on their homeowner insurance with composite roofing.

Another aspect of the webinar includes the differentiation between virgin and recycled content within composite roofing products. According to Jeff Karo with DaVinci Roofscapes, pure resins in virgin composite roofing last longer, and provide a consistent product. Recycled product is more unpredictable, and can come from milk jugs, tires or detergent bottles.

“Think of it this way,” says Karo. “If you’re installing a roof made with recycled resins and run out of product, what happens? The original order may have been made with recycled water bottles and hemp fibers. The additional order may be made with milk jugs and tires. The result is an inconsistent product line with questionable content.”

According to Karo, when a roofer selects composites made with virgin resin, they understand they are getting the “first generation” of a product. This means there is consistent durability of the roofing product. Whether the roofing tile is made last week or last year, the resin is exactly the same. In other words, it’s pure and first-use. Therefore, it has no risk of contaminants from the reclaimed materials and the recycling process.
