Hutchinson Design Group, Ltd. Receives North American Copper in Architecture Award for Restoration of the Adler Planetarium

Tom Hutchinson, AIA, Fellow-IIBEC, RRC, CSI and the Hutchinson Design Group, Ltd., Barrington, Illinois, have been awarded the Copper Development Association’s Restoration Project of the Year for the Adler Planetarium Dome Reroof. The project is one of 11 innovative copper building projects from the United States and Canada to be announced as a winner in the Copper Development Association’s annual North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) awards program. Launched in 2008, the NACIA awards program recognizes copper’s versatile use in building construction and promotes its innovative applications.

The reroofing of the Adler dome required 14,000 pounds of copper. The design consists of an internal gutter with interior drains and 18 rows of tapered roof panels crowned with a flat seam dome cap. When completed, decorative fins were added over the horizontal panel laps. The dome was encapsulated with scaffolding for access with construction taking seven months

Winning projects represented a wide variety of design styles and buildings, including educational buildings, government facilities, and churches – all of which were executed with remarkable detail, creativity, and craftsmanship.

‎“‎The 2022 NACIA winners exhibit copper’s endless range of applications through innovation in new and historical restoration projects,” ‎said Larry Peters, Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist for CDA. “Answering the growing demand to meet environmental goals using sustainable building materials, the 2022 winners demonstrate a perfect balance of maximizing green materials and longevity, creating architecture masterpieces for generations to come.”

“The new copper dome on Chicago’s Museum Campus lakefront will be an architectural landmark from land and the lake for the next century,” said Hutchinson.

A story on the award-winning project was featured in the January/February 2022 issue of Roofing magazine.

The 11 winning projects were selected by a panel of judges based on the presence and use of copper and the significance of the project at hand – whether historic, modern, or otherwise.
