Metal Roof Makes Stylish Statement on Sugarcreek, Ohio Home

The bucolic beauty of Ohio farm country is visually spectacular. Softly roofing hills as far as the eye can see, lush fields of grains and vegetables, and thick groves of deciduous trees that set the skyline on fire in autumn. And Sugarcreek, nicknamed “The Little Switzerland of Ohio,” is one of the many enclaves nestled into this distinctive Ohio splendor.

While the surroundings are exquisite, there is also the occasional threat of severe weather in this part of the country. Thunderstorms, hail, bitter cold, and snow are frequent visitors in this region of Northeast Ohio. But the most beastly weather events in Sugarcreek are storms with high winds. Recent storms with strong winds and punishing hail have caused residents to rethink the level of protection they need on the tops of their homes.

Area architects and their clients pay special attention to making the new homes fit into the natural surroundings. In 2022, construction began on a new high-end residence in Sugarcreek, a 3,200-square-foot home designed to blend into the Ohio countryside.

As long-time Sugarcreek residents, the owners were all too familiar with the harsh weather that comes through the region in spring and early summer. Their new home had to be built to withstand the sometimes brutal weather, while maintaining exceptional aesthetics that fit into the surroundings. To meet these dual objectives and maximize their peace of mind, the owners opted for a ProVia Shadewood Shake metal roof for their hillside home.

Engineered from 26-gauge galvanized steel, ProVia metal shake provided the durability and excellent aesthetics the homeowners sought.

Installing the Metal Shake

To complete the installation, Orrville, Ohio-based roofing contractor, Wayne H. Miller & Sons was selected for the project. Led by CEO Wayne H. Miller, the second generation of the Miller family to run the 40-year-old business, the company has extensive expertise in metal roofing installation. More than half of the residential roofs the company installs in central and northeast Ohio are metal.

“The extreme winds we’ve experienced in the region over the past few years have caused homeowners to opt for more protective, metal options,” explains Miller. “Today’s steel roofs like those from ProVia have come a very long way, providing the strength of steel in options that look fantastic.”

The quality of ProVia metal panels stands out, meeting or exceeding stringent ASTM and UL industry standards for hail, wind, rain, corrosion, and tensile strength. This strength is complemented by a four-point locking installation system for secure panel placement. ProVia metal shake roofing systems are also fade and chalk-resistant, and include a lifetime limited warranty.

Expertly installed by the Wayne H. Miller & Sons team, each panel is mounted to the roof with seven fasteners secured in holes pre-drilled by the manufacturer. The completed roof is capable of withstanding fierce winds up to 180 mph and is backed by Class-90 wind-uplift certification.

To make the installation as efficient as possible for contractors, ProVia delivers a complete trim and accessory package along with the panels. The metal panels, trim, caulk, underlayment, and even fasteners are delivered right to the jobsite.

“ProVia makes it extremely convenient and efficient to get the job done,” states Miller. “I’ve worked with a number of metal roofing products over the years and the performance and look of the ProVia shake roof is truly the best out there.”

Sharkskin Ultra and peel-and-stick Sharkskin Ultra SA underlayment, a state-of-the-art product designed to perform in temperatures ranging from -40˚F to 280˚F, served as a secondary moisture barrier. Galvanized hex-head screws and self-sealing galvanized hex-head screws were used on the panels and trim.

“Installation of the roof was exceptionally smooth, completed in just four days,” notes Miller. “The subs had everything in place we needed to install the metal roof, including the vents and soil pipes. Between the meticulousness of the subs and the complete package of materials delivered by ProVia, the installation proceeded without a hitch.”

Metal Accent Roofs

For the configuration of the roof, the homeowner opted for a design incorporating standing seam panels around the roof perimeter, capped off by the metal shake. The combination of vertical standing-seam panels and then ultra-realistic metal shake resulted in a visually stunning roof that blends in perfectly with the surroundings.

On-site fabrication of the standing seam panels is a unique specialty of the Wayne H. Miller & Sons team. The homeowner selected the 1.5-inch Rib Snap Lock with Striations design, one of three standing-seam profiles offered by the contractor. Each vertical panel was individually formed on-site by the install team for a precise fit. The hand-crafted process results in very little waste and like the ProVia panels, standing-seam roofs have no exposed fasteners and provide excellent wind resistance and durability.

“The most time-consuming part of the install was the tremendous amount of time and care it takes to make the transition from standing seam to the metal shake panels,” explains Miller. “It’s a real art to make the aesthetics of a design like this absolutely perfect.”

While the Wayne H. Miller & Sons team is very experienced in the installation of metal roofs, they also benefitted from participation in the ProVia Installer Certification Program (ICP) to get a better understanding of the nuances of this system. The two-day, hands-on training program provided an in-depth look at installation techniques specific to ProVia, such as the proper installation of weep trims around chimneys and skylights.

“The team at Wayne H. Miller & Sons is very experienced and they’re perfectionists when it comes to installing metal roofs,” says Joe Hochstetler, Roofing Installation Trainer at ProVia. “The contractor’s staff definitely had an advantage by going through our training, giving them a more complete understanding of how our system works and the pain points we address, ultimately enabling them to expertly install our product with the fabulous results we see in this gorgeous Sugarcreek home.”
