A system approach supports high-performing roofs

While roofing shingles are the most visible components of a high-quality roof, performance is more than meets the eye, according to, Jenilee Common, Owens Corning VP/GM Components. She says a high-performing roof functions as a system made up of thoughtfully engineered components that work together to protect the home. “Core roofing system components underlying the shingles include starter and synthetic underlayment, self-adhered and ventilation products,” says Common. “Together these components work to seal a home, defend a home and help it breathe through proper ventilation.”

Serving as a barrier on the roofing deck, roofing system components that help seal a home include WeatherLock ice and water barriers as well as synthetic underlayments like ProArmor. To defend a home, three kinds of shingles work together to protect each part of the roof—starter shingles, field shingles and hip & ridge shingles. Finally, ventilation components bring the roof system together to achieve a balanced airflow and help a home breathe. “A properly insulated and ventilated attic supports energy efficiency and comfort throughout the home,” says Common.

Investing in science and technology to drive performance

More than 400 scientists, engineers and research professionals at the world-class Owens Corning Science and Technology Center work together to develop novel materials, improve manufacturing processes and achieve high-performing products while protecting the environment. “Our scientists are passionate about sustainability says Jose Mendez-Andino, Owens Corning Executive Vice President and Chief R&D Officer. This passion drives Owens Corning to focus on creating more durable and resilient products from more sustainable materials. “By applying advanced modeling techniques with material science innovation Owens Corning has created new asphalt technologies that bring durability, resilience and ease of installation to today’s shingles,” says Mendez-Andino. He notes one break-through technology in the roofing space is Owens Corning’s patented SureNail Technology, which is offered in all of its Duration shingle product lines and delivers two times the bond strength of standard shingles along with a 130-mph wind resistance limited warranty.

Even the highest performing roofing materials demand proper installation to deliver their full value. The technological leadership of Owens Corning is supported by a commitment to educating members of the Owens Corning Roofing Contractor Network who install the company’s Total Protection Roofing System. “We educate contractors on how to install each component in the system. Design tools provide inspiration to influence curb appeal

As a home’s roof can represent 40-50% of a home’s curb appeal, Owens Corning offers multiple tools and design resources to support homeowners’ color decisions. These tools include a wide range of style boards that show how various colors coordinate with other exterior elements, and an online visualizer tool that enables homeowners to upload a photo of their home and virtually try on different roofing colors. The Build Your Roof is a digital tool helps educate homeowners about how the different components in the roof work together to support performance beneath the shingles.

“According to the Women’s Choice Award organization, women initiate up to 80% of home improvement projects. For four consecutive years, Owens Corning has been awarded the Women’s Choice Award recognizing America’s most recommended roofing products,” says Sue Burkett, marketing manager at Owens Corning. Burkett leads the company’s annual Shingle Color of the Year initiative and oversees color tools to support homeowners in the color selection process.
