Roof Materials

A 750-square-foot green roof was installed on the cantilevered entrance to the atrium that connects two MetroTop Plaza buildings. The green roof is a value-added amenity that offers an appealing, landscaped view from the windows of Plaza II, the 9-story office tower in the complex.

The extensive green roof features lightweight, pre-vegetated mats in which plants are pre-grown in an engineered growing medium. The mats’ flexible geosynthetic composite is thermally bonded to a non-woven filter fabric reinforced with a layer of non-woven fleece. The mats can be cut and rolled up like sod for transportation to project sites and then rolled out for fast, easy installation of instant green roofs. For projects in the U.S., all system components are 100 percent American-made.

Roof Report

Owned and managed by MetroTop Plaza Associates, Iselin, N.J., MetroTop Plaza is a Class A office complex.

“We selected Xero Flor because Xero Flor America assessed the site for our green roof, evaluated all the requirements for a successful, sustainable installation, and gave us a complete and price-competitive project plan,” says Sam Friedman, project executive, MetroTop Plaza Associates.

Since the project was completed in November 2013, Friedman adds the tenants’ response has been so positive that MetroTop Plaza Associates is planning a second Xero Flor green roof project. It will be an 800-square-foot green roof atop the atrium itself.
