The Vail Valley Foundation envisioned an iconic entrance for the amphitheater that not only would accommodate guests, protect against the elements and provide facilities, but also would recognize and celebrate the Ford family and mirror the amphitheater’s atmosphere.

Under the Vail Valley Foundation, Zehren’s team of architects chose approximately 5,500 square feet of PTFE fiberglass membrane canopies to make the vision for The Lobby a reality. PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene, is a Teflon-coated woven fiberglass membrane that is durable and weather resistant. The PTFE fiber coating is chemically inert, capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and immune to UV radiation.

Building Report

The Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater is a remarkable outdoor venue nestled along a hillside with a stunning view of the Rocky Mountains. The Lobby, which is adjacent to the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and Ford Park, serves not only as an impressive entrance to the amphitheater, but also as a shelter from inclement weather, a social gathering point prior to entering the amphitheater, and a place for ticket and bag check. The Lobby allows for a smooth transition into the venue.

Within the Lobby resides a mini-stage that can accommodate pre-show performances, along with a new stand for concessions and restrooms. Around the perimeter of the space rests informal boulder seating, and alpine landscapes border the surrounding walls. Overall, the aesthetics of the space mirror the pristine landscape and enjoyable outdoor atmosphere.

The Lobby also holds a Ford family tribute: a series of symbolic sculptures and interpretive elements intended to pay homage to President and Mrs. Ford and their family. This tribute is a new landmark in Vail celebrating the family’s commitment to their adopted hometown and the positive changes that they made to the community.

Building Report

The 120,000-square-foot complex sits on 24 acres in the city’s Cramer Hill section on what was once an abandoned landfill near the Delaware River. The $100 million project began eight years ago to create a community hub badly needed by a city ranking as one of the poorest in the country. The center will create an estimated 160 full- and part-time jobs.

“We hope that this Kroc center will give (children) hope,” says Major Paul Cain of the Salvation Army. “Not only to them, but also to their families, a place where they can advance and find out what the possibilities are for their life and their future.”

Energy efficiency was important to the Salvation Army. The natural daylighting of the spaces provides beautiful light but it also significantly reduces heat loss and solar heat gain. In the pools and the gymnasium, there are many days where there is no need to run the overhead lights, reducing energy and maintenance costs for the owner. The clear-span roof areas also are dramatic.

Architect: VRA Architects, Park Ridge, Ill., (847) 993-0200

Roof Materials

The Hofbrauhaus-Chicago, which houses a brewery and restaurant, has plenty of rooftop equipment, so a pre-engineered modular rooftop framing system was designed to be used as architectural roofline embellishments, as well as equipment screens for the building.

“It’s located in a high visibility site, right off the 294 Expressway and there are buildings around,” says Mark Fruth, now a senior architect at Antunovich Associates, Chicago. (When this project was completed, Fruth was with VRA Architects.) “We wanted to present a mansard like the older-style building of the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. That building is more than 400 years old.”

For the Hofbrauhaus project, the modular rooftop framing manufacturer provided design and layout services, resulting in clear and user-friendly shop drawings and permit-ready engineered plans.

The framing system can be easily tilted back or angled so it gives the appearance of a mansard. The system is adjustable to meet aesthetic desires, as well as engineering requirements. In fact, installed at an angle for this project, the wind-load requirements were not as great as they would have been with a screen that was installed at a 90-degree angle.

After the watertight framing system was installed at the edge of most of the building, painted marine plywood was attached to serve as a solid substrate for Met-Tile. Met-Tile is a 26-gauge panelized metal roofing system designed to replicate the look of clay tile roofing. The bright red color matches the decorative standing-seam metal roofing at the entrance and catches the eye of passersby.

The roofing panels were installed at different lengths to conform to the architecturally varying wall heights of the building. The modular framing system, flexible in its design capabilities, easily allowed for those heights, varying from 8 to 12 feet.

The owner wanted 600 squares of a Class 4 impact-resistant roof system to replace the concrete tiles on the 15-year-old country club. In addition, the new roof had to fit the high-end neighborhood surrounding the Gaillardia Golf and Country Club while withstanding severe weather.

The line of slate polymer roofing tiles that was chosen has the appearance and beauty of natural slate but is lightweight, impervious to freeze/thaw cycles, impact resistant, maintenance free, color-fade resistant, Class A fire rated (with specified underlayments), UL 2218 Class 4 impact rated and wind resistant to 110 mph. The tiles also resist water absorption.

Building Report

The elegant 55,000-square-foot, three-level clubhouse has a French Normandy design and features state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a fitness center, wine room and an extensive learning center. The jewel of the country club sits on the highest hilltop in northwest Oklahoma City amidst an 18-hole Tom Kite-redesigned Arthur Hill golf course on 230 acres. Used for special events, wedding and business functions, the Gaillardia Golf and Country Club was originally designed by William Zmitowski Associates, Boulder, Colo., and has been recognized as one of the top 100 clubhouses in the world.

Meeting the requirements for durability and aesthetics, a standing-seam metal roof tops the new Oak Farm Vineyards wine and hospitality facility.

“Metal was really the only choice for this project,” says John Vierra, lead designer for Delta Building Systems. “Metal was a nice contrast to the rest of the facility, which is mostly wood. Metal was an economical choice, as well. It’s durable and available in a wide variety of colors.”

The Panella family, owners and operators of Oak Farm Vineyards, chose Colonial Red for the 20,000 square feet of 24-gauge Galvalume in a 1 1/2-inch snap-lock profile with striations to mitigate the appearance of oil canning. The panels are 19-inches wide and are up to 26 feet in length on an 8:12 pitch. “It was steep and tall,” notes Richard Pruden, owner of Pruden Roofing. “We carried every panel up a ladder. We had to be extra careful.”

In addition to the steep slope, the roof includes 16 valleys, a job made easier with a SnapTable HD. “Initially, it took me and three guys four hours to install panels on one valley,” Pruden says. “Once we got the SnapTable, it took us an hour, so it saved us a lot of time. It cut panels, hemmed them and notched them for us. I think it’s safe to say it paid for itself with this one job.”

The SnapTable HD features an adjustable table width to accommodate panels measuring 12 to 22 inches, a notching station equipped with a slope-calibrated ruler that allows for 29-inch notching offset and a slitter that cuts a 33-inch maximum angle.

Meanwhile, the metal roofing manufacturer provided back office support for the contractor, including technical support, submittal information and warranties, as part of the manufacturer’s DM-ARM (Drexel Metals Association of Regional Manufacturers) program.
