{"id":4543,"date":"2016-07-27T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2016-07-27T12:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/roofingmagazine.com\/?p=4543"},"modified":"2016-07-26T17:53:14","modified_gmt":"2016-07-26T21:53:14","slug":"ibhs-participates-white-house-conference-resilient-building-codes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/roofingmagazine.com\/ibhs-participates-white-house-conference-resilient-building-codes\/","title":{"rendered":"IBHS Participates in White House Conference on Resilient Building Codes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent White House Conference on Resilient Building Codes emphasized the critical role of building codes in helping create more resilient communities and highlighted the importance of strong construction standards, such as those in the Tampa, Fla.-based <a href=\"http:\/\/DisasterSafety.org\" target=\"_blank\">Insurance Institute for Business &#038; Home Safety<\/a>\u2019s (IBHS\u2019) FORTIFIED programs.<\/p>\n<p>Several speakers at the White House event highlighted IBHS\u2019 FORTIFIED building standards and methods for new construction and retrofitting existing buildings.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, IBHS made several commitments in conjunction with the White House event, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To work closely with FEMA, the White House, other federal agen- cies, and several states to increase public awareness and use of FEMA P-804, \u201cWind Retrofit Guide for Residential Buildings\u201d, which mirrors technical knowledge underpinning the IBHS FORTIFIED Home-Hurricane standard.<\/li>\n<li>To work with partners in 2016 to integrate IBHS guidance for enhancing resilience of commercial properties into federal, state and private initiatives.<\/li>\n<li>To work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/nibs.org\" target=\"_blank\">National Institute of Building Sciences<\/a>, Washington, and other allies to provide funding and unique engineering expertise so studies providing essential proof points about the value of loss mitigation are completed expeditiously. NIBS\u2019 Multihazard Mitigation Council\u2019s 2005 \u201cMitigation Saves\u201d report found that every $1 invested in mitigation by FEMA saves society $4.
