Kemper System America Inc. offers Wall Guardian FW-100A, a liquid-applied fibered acrylic air barrier that also acts as a water/weather barrier and vapor retarder. Evaluated by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA), it delivers air barrier performance – and value.

Wall Guardian FW-100A exceeds ASTM E2357 (Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage of Air Barrier Assemblies) with an air leakage rate of just 0.0004 cfm/ft2 @ 1.57 psf – 100 times better than the test requirement. Notably, the liquid-applied air barrier exceeded the standard in a single coat at 40 mils wet film thickness.

The engineered system is designed to resist air and water infiltration, saving energy and preventing moisture build-up that can lead to mildew and mold. Compared to house wraps and mechanically-fastened weather barriers, Wall Guardian FW-100A can be applied to building material surfaces with a sprayer, roller or brush.

The liquid-applied air barrier offers unified substrate protection, even on curved or other unconventionally shaped walls. The water-based coating is a low VOC product and meets LEED intent at 25 percent recycled content. The applied coating is also Class A fire rated.

In addition to Wall Guardian FW-100A, Kemper System also offers related air barrier component products through its STS Coatings line acquired in 2016. These include GreatSeal LT-100 polyether Liquid Tape for board-to-board joints, windows, doors, masonry, roof flashings, etc., and UT-40 Universal Tape for sealing cracks, transitions, penetrations and seams in exterior substrate and insulation board.

For over 60 years, Kemper System has been a leader in cold liquid-applied, reinforced roofing and waterproofing, having invented the technology. The company offers a full range of Building Envelope solutions to protect against weather, preserve the integrity of surfaces, and enhance the comfort and value of buildings. This encompasses Wall Guardian fibered acrylic air barrier, Roof Guardian Technologies elastomer-based roof coatings, and HeatBloc-ULTRATM radiant heat barrier. Other brands include COLEAN traffic coating systems, and the company flagship for exterior and interior waterproofing, Kemperol reinforced membrane systems.

Kemper System Celebrates 60 Years Building Envelope Solutions

Kemper System is celebrating 60 years of success and building on its strengths to address the entire Building Envelope.

“Kemper System was built on novel approaches to challenges, product quality and customer service, and those continue to be the bedrock of our relationships,” says Richard Doornink, president and managing director of Kemper System America Inc. “Our role is to help architects and other specifiers find the balance between often competing goals on projects across the Building Envelope. The right technology makes those choices easier,” he states.

Today, the company offers an expanded range of Building Envelope solutions to protect against weather, preserve the integrity of surfaces and enhance the comfort and value of public buildings and commercial real estate.

As part of the company’s expansion efforts, Kemper System America acquired STS Coatings Inc. in December along with four flagship brands, and is exploring additional technologies to build its portfolio, Doornink stated. In addition to the technologies from STS Coatings, this encompasses Kemperol reinforced membrane systems, and COLEAN durable coatings systems for protecting surfaces prone to heavy wear.

Technology Roots

Kemper System traces its roots to polymer chemist Heinz B. Kemper, Ph.D., who founded the original company in 1957 after developing a roofing system using a cold liquid-applied resin reinforced with polyester fleece. After conducting over 200 trials, in 1969 he patented Kemperol V210, a reinforced membrane system which proved to be effective, and could stand up to sun, rain, snow, ice and standing water longer term.

That led to further advances in cold, liquid-applied membranes including the company’s flagship solvent-free and odor-free Kemperol 2K PUR membrane system, launched in the U.S. in 1999, and more recently, Kemperol 022 reinforced waterproofing system for indoor tile, and fire-rated Cool Roof systems – the odor-free Kemperol Reflect 2K FR and fast-curing Kemperol AC Speed FR.

Today, Kemper System products protect surfaces under a range of climatic conditions spanning: new and existing roofs, white roofs, green roofs, blue roofs, interior and below-grade waterproofing, parking garages, balconies, terraces, plazas and historic restorations. In North America, Kemperol membrane systems protect projects including the Empire State Building in New York, CN Tower in Toronto and Marketplace Tower in Seattle.

Kemper System America Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kemper System GmbH & Co. (KG | Holländische Straße 32-36 | D-34246 Vellmar). Kemper System is part of the IBG Group of companies, a mid-sized industrial holding company with more than 50 sales and distribution sites, as well as production companies all over the world.

SOPREMA Inc. is Hosting Regional Building Envelope Clinic

SOPREMA Inc. will be hosting a regional Building Envelope Clinic, in Portland, Oregon, on July 13, 2016, for architects, consultants and contractors looking to further their knowledge, network and earn continuing education units. The clinic will be held at Hotel Vintage Portland, located at 422 SW Broadway, Portland, Oregon.

The Building Envelope Clinic will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:15 p.m. with a cocktail reception and prize raffle.

“We’re proud to be offering these clinics regionally to help support our consultants, contractors and architects,” said Sara Jonas, SOPREMA. “These courses continue to bring education to the forefront for our current partners, as well as those new to SOPREMA, while helping them to achieve credits to keep their accreditations.”

Courses offered during the Building Envelope Clinic include:
• SBS-Modified Bitumen Technology–AIA/RCI Presentation
• PVC Roof Membrane Overview
• Wall Systems and Design–AIA/RCI Presentation
• PMMA/PMA Liquid Applied Membranes
• Vegetated Roofing–AIA/RCI Presentation

Repair Roof Leaks in One Step

SmartFlash EZ Patch from CertainTeed Corp.

SmartFlash EZ Patch from CertainTeed Corp.

SmartFlash EZ Patch from CertainTeed Corp. is a single-component, high-performance, self-terminating cold-liquid-applied membrane that quickly patches leaks and cracks on flat and sloping surfaces. The UV-stable, pre-saturated self-adhering product is fleece-reinforced and made of one part urethane. Each package contains latex gloves and a pre-saturated fleece patch, measuring approximately 16 by 10 1/2 inches. It can be used on bitumen, single-ply membranes, concrete, wood and metal roofing surfaces. Once finished, there is no leftover material to clean up, and the roof is rainproof in one hour and completely cured in 48 hours.
