Malarkey Roofing Products Celebrates 60 Years of Asphalt Roofing Advancements

Malarkey Roofing Products is proud to mark sixty years of asphalt roofing manufacturing by celebrating their history of innovation across multiple campaigns in 2016. Since its establishment in 1956, Malarkey has been a family owned business with a focus on quality products providing long-term solutions for customers.

Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Malarkey Roofing Products has expanded over the years to include production facilities in South Gate, California and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Throughout the company history, Malarkey has been an innovator of roofing industry advances including the first polymer modified asphalt roofing shingle in 1986, the first Scotchgard Protector shingle in 1994, and the creation of The Zone patented nailing area for improved architectural shingle installation in 2001.

The sixtieth anniversary of Malarkey Roofing Products is being celebrated throughout 2016 with a focus on historical innovations of the company as well as looking to the future of sustainable manufacturing practices. Anniversary promotions will be held throughout the year at trade shows, on social media, and during special events.

To mark the milestone anniversary, the video “The History of Malarkey Roofing Products” was created to highlight the company focus on innovation and how they have laid a foundation for future products that are mindful of environmental needs. The video focuses on the collaboration of customers, employees, products, and continual innovation for a company to succeed. Malarkey takes this concept into the slogan “A Bunch of Malarkey” to highlight the groups of customers, employees, and products that celebrate what it is to be a part of the Malarkey team.

“Malarkey is a family company and we want our employees and customers to feel like part of that family,” states Malarkey Roofing Products President Jim Fagan. “I’m proud to be part of a company with such a long history of innovations that focus on quality. We are looking forward to continuing that tradition with roofing solutions that will take us into the future of sustainable roofing.”

Malarkey Roofing Products Focuses on Sustainability and Safety

Malarkey Roofing Products announces GreenCircle Certified LLC Waste Diversion from Landfill certification of Malarkey manufacturing facilities and congratulates employees on new safety milestones.

GreenCircle provides third-party certification of sustainability claims through a rigorous scientific evaluation based on internationally recognized standards and guidelines. All three of the Malarkey asphalt roofing facilities achieved the Waste Diversion from Landfill certification, demonstrating responsible management of end-of-life materials.

“We are thrilled to certify Malarkey Roofing Products for their outstanding achievements in Waste Diversion,” says Certification and Operations manager at GreenCircle Certified LLC Anne Bevan. “Through a combination of innovative ideas, employee engagement, and a commitment to the environment, Malarkey has successfully made a huge reduction in its impact.”

In the GreenCircle certification process, diversion and reduction can be achieved through a combination of approved methods. Malarkey utilized the methods of source reduction, recycling, energy recovery, and reuse of materials to achieve waste diversion from landfill thresholds. The evaluated Malarkey facilities achieved diversion rates of 90 percent or greater as follows:

  • Portland, Ore. – 94 percent waste diversion
  • South Gate, Calif. – 92 percent waste diversion
  • Oklahoma City, Okla. – 90 percent waste diversion

The Portland location has a fiberglass mat facility on site, which was not included in this analysis in order to achieve a more direct comparison to other facilities in the industry. Malarkey plans to pursue separate certification for the mat facility at a later date.

“Malarkey has promoted sustainability internally for years with initiatives like our renewable energy usage in Portland and recycling programs across all of our facilities,” says Malarkey President Jim Fagan. “Sustainability is a vital aspect of our commitment to our customers and local communities. It is an asset to have third-party validation that shows how we are doing and where we can continue to improve.”

In addition to promoting sustainability, Malarkey continues to promote safety throughout their facilities. According to plant manager Steve Rosko, the Portland facility achieved 31 months with only one OSHA recordable accident, including a milestone in July 2015 of more than one million hours worked without an accident.

“Safety has been a priority at Malarkey for a long time,” says Rosko. “I stress two things with our employees: safety and product quality. This is a family business, and we treat our employees as a member of the family.”

According to President Jim Fagan, Malarkey has taken great strides in environmental and safety standards, with plans to pursue additional environmental certifications in the future. That direction is reflected with Malarkey Environmental Health and Safety Officer for the Portland facility, Mike Tuel, who looks to continue evolving facilities to set the standard for roofing manufacturing operations.

“We have a legal responsibility to comply with environmental and safety standards,” says Tuel. “But we also see it as a moral obligation to our communities. It’s the right thing to do, and it is reassuring to know that commitment comes from the very top of our company to continue this path.”

Malarkey Roofing Products Sponsors Nailing Competition at Inaugural WSRCA Roofing Games

The Western States Roofing Contractors Association introduced The Roofing Games at the Western Roofing Expo in June. Designed specifically for the roofing industry, The Roofing Games are the nation’s first official set of competitions sanctioned by a roofing association and are produced in conjunction with the Western Roofing Expo. Participants compete in a series of events that challenge their knowledge and skill set level pertaining to equipment, materials, and processes used in the roofing industry. The WSRCA believes this new addition to the Western Roofing Expo will bring out the competitive spirit in roofing contractors, technicians, and workers, while instilling confidence to excel in their trade, giving them a sense of pride and belonging in an industry that requires both brains and brawn.

This year WSRCA kicked off The Roofing Games with one main event: The Nailing Competition, which was sponsored by Malarkey Roofing Products. The competition was held on Tuesday, June 10th from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Six contestants were randomly chosen in a drawing during the Malarkey Roofing Products demo. With two decks on the stage, contestants battled in a timed event, showcasing their individual asphalt-shingle nailing skills. Contestants were judged on time and accurate shingle installation. The event was well received by attendees and exhibitors, not to mention the participants, who received cash prizes donated by Malarkey Roofing Products. Each participant had the chance of winning anywhere from $100 to $500, plus a Malarkey jacket. WSRCA plans to expand The Roofing Games to include additional events for the Western Roofing Expo 2015.
