3-D Printing Technology Project Will Be Presented at METALCON

The international event for the metal construction industry showcases a 3-D printing technology project developed by the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and industry partners at METALCON’s annual tradeshow and conference on Oct. 26 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
               
As part of its focus on technology this year, METALCON is featuring ORNL’s Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy (AMIE) project.  AMIE demonstrates innovation through additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, addressing electricity supply and reliability challenges via an integrated approach to power generation, storage and consumption.   
               
AMIE connects a natural gas-powered hybrid electric vehicle with a building, both printed a polymer 3-D printer.  Power flows between the vehicle and building using a bi-directional wireless power transfer technology developed by ORNL.  The structure’s 3.2-kilowatt solar panel system, paired with the electric vehicle’s batteries, generates and stores renewable power.   It is a model for systems that link buildings, vehicles and the grid, offsetting power supply disruptions.
                
In addition, AMIE exemplifies additive manufacturing’s prototyping potential in design, manufacturing and construction technologies, which will enable products to go-to-market quickly and reduce the amount of waste generated by traditional construction methods.  
               
Dr. Roderick Jackson, the technical lead for AMIE and the building envelope systems research group leader at ORNL, is a guest speaker at METALCON.  Jackson, who has a background in construction, will present the “Future of Design and Technology Trends in Construction” followed by a guided tour of AMIE in the exhibit hall.  He will explain multiple uses of this technology combined into one project and discuss the potential of integrated design, build and energy efforts.
            
“The folks at METALCON and the Metal Construction Association (MCA) understand the concept and recognize the innovation AMIE presents and how this technology could apply to the metal construction industry,” said Jackson.

“The idea behind this prototype is to introduce disruptive innovations to the construction industry.  Although AMIE is constructed from polymer composites, we can explore how to apply this technology to the metal construction industry.” 
               
“We brought together expertise from multiple research teams, along with 20 industry partners including 100 individuals, and the U.S. Department of Energy,” said Jackson.  “We took the risk to demonstrate how it can be done.  We went from a sketch on a restaurant receipt after a dinner meeting to a final product demo in nine months.  We will discuss not only how it was done, but also what prototyping means for the future of the construction industry.”
                 
“We want to know what innovations we can implement today to prepare the metal construction industry for the future,” said Jackson.  “Perhaps there is a challenge in the industry we can help overcome using additive manufacturing or integrated energy technologies.”

METALCON Show Director, Claire Kilcoyne, is excited to showcase AMIE in the exhibit hall.  “We have an opportunity to create an interactive learning experience for our attendees by connecting our educational program to the exhibit hall with this added attraction,” said Kilcoyne.  “This 3-D printing technology offers benefits to the metal construction industry.”

Metal Construction Association is Accepting Triumph Award Nominations

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) is accepting nominations for its Triumph Awards, a way to honor the people and companies that champion the metal construction industry each year.

The annual MCA Triumph Awards honors individuals and organizations throughout the metal construction industry, from academia to entrepreneurs, from marketing to research. The nomination form can found on the Triumph Awards webpage on the MCA website. An individual, business or organization can make nominations. Nominations will be accepted in six categories.

Industry Champion of the Year Award: An individual from any position within the metal construction industry that has championed the industry and has had an overall impact on advancing the industry. The nominee could be from academia, code driven, marketing driven, or any area that has benefited the overall industry.

Industry Young Movers and Shakers Awards: For those under 35 who are up and coming in the industry and should be recognized as someone to watch. Multiple winners are possible.

Industry Media Executive / Journalist of the Year Award: Recognizing someone from the media who has made an impact on our industry through media and journalism.

Industry Sales Person of the Year Award: Recognizing a sales professional who has impacted on their company.

Entrepreneur of the Year: Recognizing an individual who was the original founder of a company in our industry (contractor to manufacturer to building system) who has who has built a successful company.

Corporate Citizen of the Year: A company that has shown commitment to bettering the world outside of their normal business through their involvement and dedication to a cause or charity.

Nominations are open to the public and will be judged by a 10-person committee. The judging committee will consist of members from a variety of groups including members from the Metal Construction Association (MCA), Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA), National Frame Building Association (NFBA) as well as at-large volunteers.

The awards will be presented at a marquee event designed to celebrate honorees at METALCON, October 26, 2016 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The idea for the commendation was initiated by Keith Lipps, vice president of Marketing and Sales from MCA member company, S-5!. “So many people do great things everyday at various levels in their career using many different skill sets, and it’s their achievements that make this industry thrive,” said Lipps. “We want to celebrate these contributions with a premier award because it’s everyone working together that makes us strong.”

MCA Offers Metal Roofing Training

The market for residential metal roofing continues to grow rapidly as homeowners are learning of its many energy-saving, aesthetic and long-lasting benefits. Contractors wanting to capitalize on this expanding metal roofing market can find in-depth educational resources about metal roofing training for existing and incoming personnel on the MCA website.

On the website, visitors will find comprehensive training in the form of a Metal Roofing Installation Manual and an optional online exam. The manual is a free download, which includes 20 chapters and hundreds of pages and illustrations to help ensure industry best practices are used when installing metal roofs. The accompanying online exam was designed to confirm that installers and contractors have a full grasp of the best practices outlined in the manual.

The exam includes tests for each different chapter with 10 questions each. A “Save and Resume” feature is enabled for the participant’s convenience. Each question addresses the various topics of metal roof installation and related accessories and includes questions pertaining to both new construction reroofing and retrofit projects. A certificate of completion is sent electronically to successful participants. The exam is available for $100 from the association’s online store accessible at www.metalconstruction.org. Unsuccessful participants may retake the exam at no additional charge.

Both are valuable resources to educate new and experienced roofing installers and can help spur contractor growth in the expanding metal roofing market.

MCA is also involved with the Metal Roofing Alliance, a great resource for residential roofing information and promotion through its national consumer marketing program.

Roof Hugger Celebrates 25th Anniversary

In 1991, two developer/contactors and longtime friends, Red McConnohie and Dale Nelson, began a part-time business to manufacture and distribute structurally sound sub-purlins for installing a new metal roof directly over an existing metal roof. The idea came about because McConnohie owned a lease building that needed its roof to be replaced. After a few design sketches using a factory-notch concept with some ingenuity, the original Hugger sub-purlin came alive. McConnohie got his building reroofed and proposed to Nelson that they start a business together selling this innovative new product. So, they set off on a journey, which has lasted 25 years, and now has covered more than 70 million square feet of existing roofs nationally and abroad. The company is the brand Roof Hugger Inc.

The trek was not always that easy because the product is designed to fit over and around the major ribs of the existing panels. Have you ever thought about how many different metal roof profiles are out there? Hundreds, if not thousands. You have ribbed panels in a multitude of spacing and heights from 6 to 13 inches, there are corrugated panels with corrugations spaced from 2.25 to 4 inches, and of course, there are standing seams. These also widely varied because of the vertical and trapezoidal seam configurations, rib-to-rib spacing and heights and with or without standoff clips. Today, Roof Hugger has built a library full of manufacturer literature, both from the old days and the more recent. They refer to this library countless times during a given year but even to this day, they are given a previously unknown panel from a contractor or building owner needing to reroof an existing metal building.

Not only do the profiles and variations of existing metal roofs make this niche roof replacement market challenging at times, but because of the new stringent code requirements, you have panel testing to contend with, as well. Every manufacturer today, producing metal roofing, has and will continue to have their systems tested for performance. The most utilized test standard is known in metal construction as the “Standard Test Method for Structural Performance of Sheet Metal Roof and Siding Systems by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference” or ASTM E-1592. Without it, it is extremely difficult to engineer roofing products to meet specified building code requirements for given wind speeds. It is not widely understood but each metal roof’s testing can and does vary from its counterparts although they frequently can look almost identical. This is due to seam design, clip design, metal thickness, design specifications and manufacturing limitations. Because of this, Roof Hugger began testing in 1996 and now has numerous metal roofs that have been tested over their sub-purlin systems. They have an (FM) Factory Mutual approval, as well as several (FL#) Florida Product Approved assemblies.

As Roof Hugger celebrates its 25th year, the Hugger team located outside Tampa, Fla., is excited to carry the “Hugger” brands on into the future. McConnohie passed in 2013 at the age of 87, and Roof Hugger is a big part of Red’s legacy, but Dale and Jan Nelson, now owners of Roof Hugger, continue to work relentlessly to make the Hugger stable of products better than any other metal-over-metal retrofit roof system available. Jan Nelson recently commented that “they are so fortunate to have met and grown to know the fabulous people in the metal construction industry via trade shows and organizational meetings. She went on to say, “We have gained an extended family that is surely the best gift of this journey and it puts a smile on my face daily.” Dale Nelson said, “I can’t believe it’s been 25 years. It’s been one heck of an enjoyable ride.” Dale Nelson was recently elected chairman of the Metal Construction Association (MCA), which he is no stranger to this kind of work. He has committed much of his life to volunteer work in both his private life, as well as in business activities.

Roof Hugger now has four production locations in Florida, Indiana, Texas and Washington. Three of their sub-purlin profiles can ship within two to three days and others are made-to-order to ship within 10 to 15 days. Roof Hugger is specified by numerous levels of local, state and federal government agencies, especially the U.S. Military. A recent look at their shipments, found that more than 3 million square feet have been installed at more than 70 domestic military facilities. They provide quotes in hours and a live voice always answers the phone. Prior to Red’s passing, if you were lucky he would answer the phone with a loud “ROOF HUGGER – McCONNOHIE”, and when you call today you will still get an equally enthusiastic greeting from the Roof Hugger crew of Jan, Bill, DJ or Dale.

MCA Enhances Its Website’s Technical Resources Section

It is now easier for architects, contractors and building managers looking for technical assistance to access a wealth of metal construction resources on the Metal Construction Association’s (MCA) website.

The MCA has reorganized more than 25 technical resources that are available for free download from the association’s website. Resources range from MCM Specifications to Metal Roofing Guides for Cold Climates to best practices guides for Fasteners, Rain Screen and Wall Systems, and Roof Seeming. The technical resources section of the website has been enhanced to display the newest resources at the top, followed by resources grouped by application category. Categories include metal roofing, metal walls, insulated metal panels and an other category, which includes resources related to metal roof and metal wall components, fastening tools, life cycle assessments, roll forming, and more.

“We are continually developing new materials based on needs in the industry,” says MCA Technical Director Scott Kriner. “We are committed to raising the level of expertise among all those that take part in designing, specifying and installing metal building products.”

MCA Elects Officers and Directors

The Chicago-based Metal Construction Association elected its 2016 officers and board of directors at its annual meeting, Feb. 2, in St. Pete Beach, Fla.

Dale Nelson, president of Roof Hugger Inc., was elected chair of the association. Ed Karper, account manager for Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc., was elected vice-chair, and Jim Bush, vice president of sales and marketing for ATAS International Inc., will serve as treasurer. Norbert Schneider, general manager Asia Pacific & Americas of Umicore Building Products USA Inc., was elected secretary. Also serving on the executive committee is Bill Croucher, director of engineering for Fabral, as technical committee chair; Brian Partyka, president of Drexel Metals Inc., as market development chair; Dick Bus, president of ATAS International, as president of the Metal Roofing Alliance; and Karl Hielscher, president of Metl-Span, as past chair.

MCA Presents Awards to Three Outstanding Achievers in the Metal Construction Industry

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) presented awards to three outstanding achievers in the metal construction industry at its winter meeting held in St. Pete Beach, Fla.

Mark James of Roof Hugger Inc. and Randy Allen from Triangle Fastener Corp. were honored with MCA’s Patrick R. Bush Volunteer Service Award, and Ken Buchinger of NCI Building Systems was honored with MCA’s Larry A. Swaney Award.

With 38 years in the metal construction industry, Allen was acknowledged for championing the creation of the MCA Accessories Council, which he is now serving as chair. He was also recognized for his involvement in numerous other MCA committees, councils and initiatives including assisting with the demo area at METALCON, helping to facilitate the Metal Roofing Championship Games, and coordinating MCA’s golf outings.

Credited with completing more than 30 million square feet of retrofit roof projects in his career, Mark James was appreciated for his work in planning, constructing and operating the MCA demo area at METALCON. He was also recognized for being the primary individual responsible for the Metal Roofing Championship Games for the past two years, as well as actively volunteering on the council level.

With more than 40 years in the metal construction industry, Ken Buchinger was honored for serving on the MCA Board from 2006-14, as well as his contributions in technical research for the association. Buchinger’s work led to many key initiatives that benefited the metal construction industry, including MCA’s Metal Roof Service Life Project and its Spray Foam Research Project. He has been an ambassador for education and training and a primary contributor to MCA’s Roofing Installation Manual.

MBCI’s General Manager Wins MCA’s Larry A. Swaney Award

MBCI General Manager of Technical Services Ken Buchinger was named the recipient of the Metal Construction Association’s (MCA) Larry A. Swaney Award during its annual winter meeting.

Named after the founding president of the association, this prestigious award honors an individual who selflessly and determinedly works for the success of MCA and the advancement of the metal construction industry at large. The recipient is driven by the same intentions as Swaney: To advocate for the betterment of metal construction through research, education and collaboration that transcends personal or company gains.

Buchinger began working at MBCI in 1988, and throughout his tenure he has been responsible for product development, field services, research and development, claims, warranties, and the creation and management of installation manuals and catalogs.

MBCI President Bill Coleman says, “Ken has been an invaluable member of our family for 28 years, and I am overjoyed that the industry is recognizing him for his many contributions to the research and technical advancement of metal construction.”

Buchinger is actively involved in several trade associations and has written numerous articles for various industry publications and delivers presentations for various organizations. Prior to working at MBCI, Buchinger was part owner of Whitehouse Construction Co. and erected metal buildings, architectural roofing systems and structural steel for 13 years.

The accompanying online exam, which is $100, confirms installers and contractors have a full grasp of the best practices outlined in the manual.

CIDAN Machinery Joins the Metal Construction Association

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) welcomes CIDAN Machinery to its membership roster. The company has joined the association’s ranks of about 75 member companies with specialties in the metal construction industry.

CIDAN Machinery has manufactured machines since 1907 and is a well-established company within the sheet metal industry. The company manufactures and markets the brands CIDAN and Göteneds at its factory in Götene, Sweden.

“CIDAN Machinery is excited to participate in networking and stay current with the metal construction industry,” says Larry Chandonnet, CIDAN’s president.

MCA member companies benefit from participation in association activities that focus on research, codes and standards, market development, and technical programs. The association works to increase the use of metal materials in construction by educating the building and design communities about the benefits of metal.
