MCA Launches Triumph Awards to Honor Those Who Impact the Advancement of the Metal Construction Industry

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has formed the MCA Triumph Awards, a new way to honor the many different kinds of people and companies that champion the growth and development of the metal construction industry each year.

Announced at the METALCON show, the idea for the commendation was initiated by Keith Lipps, vice president of marketing and sales from MCA member company, S-5!. “So many people do great things everyday at various levels in their career using many different skill sets, and it’s their achievements that make this industry thrive,” says Lipps. “We want to celebrate these contributions with a premier award because it’s everyone working together that makes us strong.”

The annual MCA Triumph Awards will honor individuals and companies from throughout the metal construction industry, from academia to code development to marketing and communication to research and innovation. The inaugural Triumph Award went to Claire Kilcoyne of PSMJ Resources who was awarded the first Industry Champion of the Year Award for spearheading the METALCON show for 25 successful years.

Future honorees will be nominated by their peers and judged by a 10-person committee. The awards will be presented at a marquee event designed to celebrate honorees with a formal dinner and light-hearted entertainment. “It will be the Academy Awards of the metal construction industry,” says Lipps.

Nominations are open to the public and will be accepted beginning February 2016. The awards event will be held Oct. 26, 2016 in Baltimore. The judging committee will consist of members from a variety of groups, including members from the MCA, Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA), National Frame Building Association (NFBA), as well as at-large volunteers.

“We are thrilled to be on the ground floor planning for this awards program,” says Kristin Peregoy with MCA member company, New Tech Machinery. Peregoy has been instrumental in launching the program along with Lipps. “As a new member company of MCA, we wanted to get involved and we couldn’t ask for a more exciting opportunity.”

The MCA Triumph Awards will be given in nine categories:

  • Industry Champion of the Year Award: An individual from any field or position that has made a great overall impact on advancing the metal construction industry.
  • Industry Young Movers and Shakers Awards: For those younger than 35 who demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in his or her business or profession.
  • Industry Media Executive / Journalist of the Year Award: A member the media who has made a significant impact on the metal construction industry through media and journalism.
  • Industry Sales Person of the Year Award: A sales professional who has had the greatest impact on their company in the previous 12 months.
  • Entrepreneur of the Year: An individual who was the original founder of a business in the metal construction industry (contractor, manufacturer or building system) who has who has built a successful company.
  • Business of the Year – Contractor, Manufacturer, and Service Provider: A company in each category that has demonstrated achievement and an exceptional previous 18 months.
  • Emerging Business of the Year: A new company in the metal construction industry that has demonstrated achievement and an exceptional previous 18 months.
  • Corporate Citizen – Business of the Year and Individual of the Year: An individual and a company that has shown commitment to bettering the world outside of their normal business through their involvement and dedication to a cause or charity.
  • Marketer of the Year – Business to Business and Consumer: Marketers and their agencies for exceptional integrated marketing campaigns that have promoted their companies with exceptional creative and strategy over the past 12 months.

MCA will be providing additional information about how to submit nominations for the award and opportunities for corporate sponsorships in the coming months.

MCA Recognizes Eight Building Projects at Chairman’s Awards Show

Selected by a panel of professional architects, eight outstanding building projects from across the country were recognized by the Metal Construction Association (MCA) at the 2015 Chairman’s Awards show.

Announced at the METALCON Tradeshow and Conference at the Tampa Convention Center, the Chairman’s Awards are given to the year’s most exceptional building projects involving MCA member companies. Awards are based on overall appearance, significance of metal in the project, innovative use of metal, and the role of metal in achieving project objectives.

METALCON Helps Veterans in Local Community

The metal construction industry’s international event for metal construction products, technologies and solutions gives back to the local community during its 25th annual METALCON tradeshow and conference taking place Oct. 14-16 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla.

METALCON is partnering with the America’s Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping U.S. armed forces’ veterans, to raise money for military veterans in need of care at Tampa’s Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center.

METALCON is no stranger to the local community. At METALCON 2006 in Tampa, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Paul Russell ‘Russ’ Marek of Satellite Beach, Fla., was awarded a new, ADA-compliant accessible home through METALCON’s annual giving back program. Marek who was severely injured in 2005 while serving in Iraq spent more than a year recuperating at Tampa’s James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, which opened its Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center in 2014—this year’s recipient of METALCON’s giving back program.

The Tampa Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center is one of five facilities in the U.S. designed to provide intensive rehabilitative care to veterans and servicemembers who have experienced severe injuries.

Staff Sgt. Marek suffered serious injuries when his tank was destroyed by enemy fire. His right arm and leg were severed, in addition to parts of his right ear and left hand. He also suffered severe head trauma and burns to more than 20 percent of his body. “To date, Russ has made amazing progress in his recovery and soon is expected to be walking without assistance,” says Russ’ father, Paul Marek Sr.

METALCON Show Director Claire Kilcoyne was incredibly moved by Staff Sgt. Marek’s courage and determination to move forward. Having maintained a strong relationship over the years with Marek and his family, they look forward to joining together at METALCON’S 25th anniversary celebration.

Knowing many more young military heroes exist, Kilcoyne announces METALCON’s giving back program will continue to benefit the America’s Fund throughout each year, assisting military in all branches of the U.S. armed forces.

“Going forward we want to ensure METALCON’s giving back efforts benefit those brave individuals who’ve put their futures on the line to make all of us safer and able to enjoy all of the freedoms we have,” says Kilcoyne. “By affiliating with America’s Fund, we open the door for more recipients and donations on an ongoing basis, not just at our annual event.”

Donations can be made to America’s Fund throughout the year and can be applied to specific programs or veterans upon request.

America’s Fund is a program created to direct urgently needed resources and financial support to injured and critically ill members of the U.S. armed forces and their families. It is a self-funded program of the Semper Fi Fund. Since its inception in 2004, the Semper Fi Fund has provided more than $100 million in support to veterans and their families.

“We are honored to be chosen as the official charity of METALCON; their support will make a difference in the lives of so many service members and their loved ones,” says Karen Guenther, CEO and president, Semper Fi Fund.

Contributions to the America’s Fund can be made on the METALCON website or in the exhibit hall at The Deck, booth 973. Army Staff Sgt. Marek, along with America’s Fund representatives and METALCON management will be available for comment at the booth on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Certain Metal Roof Systems Have a Service Life of at Least 60 Years

The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute (ASMI) has accepted a recent report published by the Metal Construction Association (MCA) that verifies certain metal roof systems can have a service life of at least 60 years. The service life report served as the technical substantiation required for Athena to change the useful service life of this type of roofing product to 60 years, which can be longer than the buildings they cover.

“We are honored that our service life study for metal roofing met Athena’s high standards and will now be used in whole building life cycle assessments for buildings throughout the country,” says Scott Kriner, MCA’s technical director

Athena’s software allows for whole building LCA assessment, taking into account all materials, systems, assemblies and components used in a given type of building. The Metal Roof Service Life report, which was sponsored by MCA and the ZAC Association, studied the service life of unpainted 55 percent Al-Zn low-slope standing-seam metal roofing in a wide range of different environments across the U.S.

MCA Celebrates 25th Anniversary of METALCON

As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of METALCON, the Metal Construction Association (MCA) is reinvigorating its presence on the show floor, including a new educational theater and displays at the association’s newly designed booth (#1831), as well as the annual Chairman’s Awards presentation, and expanded Metal Roofing Championship Games.

This year, MCA’s councils, which serve various segments of the metal construction industry, are represented through informative displays and educational sessions held daily in a theater at the booth. The 20-minute sessions will highlight the advancements that MCA and its members are making together to benefit the industry. Sessions include:

In addition, MCA has added a new challenge to the MCA/METALCON Metal Roofing Championship Games, which will take place in booth #109. This year’s theme is ‘Battle by the Bay’ and will include five different competitions where contractors can compete to win cash prizes in challenges that include the proper use of screw guns and seamers, as well as installing retrofit sub-framing, standing seam roof panels, snow retention and other common rooftop accessories.

The games will be held on each of the three days of the show, during exhibit hall hours, and each of the challenges has a $100 cash prize for the winner or winning team.

METALCON will be held Oct. 14-16, 2015 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla.

MCA Publishes Technical Resource on Selecting Proper Types of Fasteners

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has published a new technical resource to assist designers and installers in selecting the proper type of fastener: Fastener Compatibility with Profiled Metal Roof and Wall Panels.

Found in the technical resources section of the MCA website at www.metalconstruction.org, the new bulletin includes a convenient table that serves as a guideline to check fastener compatibility with different types of cladding materials. The table references corrosion resistance between eight common types of metal roof and wall cladding materials and nine different fasteners. With it, users can quickly determine if they are matching the right fastener with the right roof or wall material to ensure performance over time and a strong, weather tight attachment.

The integrity and aesthetics of a building is at risk when the wrong type of fastener is used with a metal roof or wall cladding system. Premature corrosion of the metal panel and/or the fastener may occur under certain conditions. Known as galvanic corrosion, this is often a result of corrosion between the dissimilar metals that are in contact with each other. To prevent dissimilar metal corrosion at the connection point, fasteners should be made of a compatible or the same material as the roof or wall material whenever possible. At the very least, the fastener should display equivalent corrosion resistance to the material being fastened.

The bulletin also provides a discussion on the fastener durability and the roles (primary or secondary) and type (self-drilling, self-tapping and self-piercing) of fasteners that will help designers and installers achieve high fastener performance.

The MCA updates its education/technical resources section on its website on a regular basis, addressing practical and educational topics related to the metal construction industry. All materials are available free to website visitors to download in PDF format.

MCA Begins Research Projects

The Chicago-based Metal Construction Association is taking on three new research projects, which were topics at the association’s summer meeting. The results of the three studies, which will take place over several years, are expected to make a significant impact in the industry.

Air permeability research is being conducted at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and will evaluate and characterize the performance of discontinuous metal panels, such as modular metal roof panels and snap-together standing-seam roofing. The project goal is to develop a new test method that will more realistically reflect the wind up-lift these systems can withstand. The main test utilized for the work will be UL 1897 in the static and dynamic mode. Wind-tunnel testing and variations to existing industry test methods will also be used.

Research on cool walls is being funded by a grant awarded to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif. This study is important for California cities to reduce building energy usage and help address the urban heat-island effect. The project will evaluate the types of wall material snow in the marketplace and in the three climate zones in California. In addition to energy usage, the study will evaluate the dirt-shedding capability and durability of these wall materials. New technologies for ultra-cool pigmentation are also being investigated as part of this research.

Research on the use of spray polyurethane foam insulation on metal panels is also being conducted for wall and roof assemblies. The goal of this research project is to evaluate the effects of spray foam on metal. This project was proposed in conjunction with the Fairfax, Va.-based Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) and the Cleveland-based Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA). A few of the main concerns that led to this project are oil canning and potential damage to paint films caused by the exothermic curing of the foam and associated elevated temperatures. As a collaboration among MCA, MBMA and SPFA, preliminary research has already been completed to evaluate exothermic curing on metal. The next phase will include the use of full-size wall and roof assemblies with foam sprayed using different application methods. Based on the project findings, a best practices guideline for using spray-foam insulation with metal wall and roof assemblies will be generated.

MCA’s commitment to these projects is part of the association’s goal to further the growth and promote the environmental benefits of metal products in the construction industry.

METALCON Offers Education Sessions to Improve Techniques and Skills

For construction professionals in the field and those in the front office, METALCON 2015 has education sessions to improve their field techniques, management skills and business success. Each year METALCON attracts metal building, residential and roofing contractors, architects, engineers, developers, facility managers, fabricators and building owners from more than 52 countries who want to learn more about metal.

An impressive lineup of experts in metal, construction, leadership and business development will share their knowledge with these attendees at the 25th annual METALCON. This conference and exhibition takes place at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla., from Wednesday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Oct. 16, 2015. It is the only event focused on the application of metal in residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and municipal construction.

Leading the group of experts at the 2015 METALCON is keynoter Clyde Fessler, retired vice president of business development for Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Fessler led the turnaround that brought the company back from the brink of disaster to its place as the leading motorcycle brand in the world. He will take attendees on an exciting journey of how he achieved this feat. He’ll share how the five P’s: People, Passion, Product, Price and Promotion can bring success to anyone in a competitive environment. His fascinating session takes place Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m.

MCA Study: Metal Roofing Market Sees Continued Growth

The market for metal products in the U.S. grew 4 percent annually during the past five years, according to an industry study released by the Metal Construction Association (MCA). This growth is significant because it occurred from 2009 through 2014, during the economic downturn when construction volumes declined and building owners and specifiers were particularly cost conscious.

The metal roofing market has seen even greater growth in both the residential and commercial sectors. In the residential market, use of metal roofing grew 7.1 percent in new construction and 4.1 percent in replacement roofing. In the commercial sector, metal roofing grew 9.7 percent in the five-year period. The industry also saw an 8.7 percent growth in metal wall panels in commercial building during this same time period.

“We are encouraged by this data because as the economy continues to improve and construction volumes further recover, we see even greater opportunities for growth in metal building materials,” says John Ryan, MCA’s director of marketing. “Metal meets the requirements of today’s builders from environmental responsibility to ease of construction to durability.”

MCA credits much of this growth to the metal industry’s efforts to educate the design community about the long-term value of metal roof and wall products. Key benefits of metal products over competitive materials include: energy efficiency and performance, LEED certification/green building, aesthetic appeal, life-cycle cost, durability, and speed of construction.

MCA joined together with five partner associations beginning in 2009 to compile the data for this industry study. The purpose was to create a custom market model using standard measures in order to track industry growth over time. Study participants included data from the key associations: The American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI), the Aluminum Association (AA), Metal Roofing Alliance, National Frame Building Association (NFBA) and the National Coil Coaters Association (NCCA).

MCA Offers 50 Percent off New Membership Dues

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) announces that new members qualify to receive 50 percent off their first year’s dues if they sign up in 2015. MCA also revised its dues schedule in 2015, resulting in drastically lower dues for many member companies. MCA membership is now more affordable than ever, while providing the same valuable benefits it always has.

MCA member companies benefit from participation in association activities that focus on research, codes and standards, market development, and technical programs. The association works to increase the use of metal materials in construction through the education of the building and design communities about the benefits of metal.
