St. Leo’s Parish of Sonoma, California, has served its community for more than 55 years. Located on an eight-acre site in the heart of Sonoma’s beautiful Valley of the Moon, the property includes a church, the priests’ residence, Hunt Hall where the high school youth ministry meets, a portable classroom called Matthews Hall, and the Finnegan Center, which houses the parish offices and several classrooms. It also includes a tool shed and garage/food pantry.
On the site, six buildings required reroofing — the priests’ residence, Hunt Hall, tool shed, garage/pantry, Matthews Hall, and the Finnegan Center. The largest roof, the Finnegan Center, was a 65-square job. The smallest building was the four-square tool shed. More than 160 squares of shingles were required to complete the project.
A+ Quality Roofing was hired to install the new roof systems. Serving Sonoma-area communities including Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Boyes Hot Springs, and Schellville, A+ Quality Roofing is a family-owned roofing business. The company was founded by Darren Richards, who has worked in the roofing industry for more than 30 years. Richards is hands on, making sure every repair and roof replacement is done right, safely, and on time.
The owners of A+ Quality Roofing are more than expert roofers; they are deeply connected to the Sonoma community and St. Leo’s parish. In fact, the family of A+ Quality Roofing’s owner, Darren Richards, belonged to St. Leo’s parish when he was a kid, and his brother was married in the church several years ago.
“Handling projects like St. Leo’s is an honor as well as a responsibility,” explains Richards. “We are part of this community, and the parishioners of St. Leo’s are our friends, colleagues, and neighbors. We have to make sure we do a superb job each and every time to maintain the reputation for exceptional quality, service, and value that we’ve worked so hard to earn.”
Installing the Right Roof
The Premier line of architectural shingles from PABCO Roofing Products was selected for the five steep-slope roofs. The high-quality Premier shingle was ideal for this project, providing dependable protection as well as UL790 Class A fire resistance and the PABCO limited-lifetime warranty, both important considerations in the selection process. Harvest Brown color was chosen, as it complemented the buildings’ exteriors and a provided a natural fit in the surroundings of the Sonoma landscape.
The project was performed in stages over the course of 2022 and was completed in December. “It was a very straightforward job,” said Darren. “Despite there being a number of individual buildings, the project proceeded without a hitch.”
The A+ Quality Roofing team installed 30-pound felt underlayment throughout the project, as well as 9-inch starter strip, and a standard hip and ridge. Torch-down roofing was used on the flat roof of the portable classroom, Matthews Hall.
Like St. Leo’s, it’s important to A+ Quality Roofing to give back to the community. The company frequently organizes golf and softball tournaments to raise money for local grade schools. Over the course of the project, A+ Quality Roofing staff witnessed a number of the good works St. Leo’s performs in the community. “Every Tuesday, I saw ‘Groceries to Go,’ a drive-through food distribution service provided to any and all who show up,” said Richards. “We also noticed people going to the food pantry throughout the week for a box of meat and dry goods,”
“I’ve known Darren and his family for many years, and our board was well aware of the impeccable reputation his company has for installation and service,” stated Father Jojo Puthussery, Pastor of St. Leo’s Parish. “We couldn’t be any more pleased about the work Darren and his team performed and the fantastic look of the new roofs.”
A+ Quality Roofing completed the multi-structure project at St. Leo’s on time and on budget. The result is a high-quality roof that looks great, is a fit for the aesthetics of the local environment, and will protect the underlying structures for years to come.
