The Club at Wynstone Invests in Synthetic Shake Roofing

Opened in 1989, The Club at Wynstone is a full-service private lifestyle club in North Barrington, Illinois. Until recently, real cedar shake roofing topped multiple buildings in the development. Then the complex was struck with hail damage that destroyed the roofing.

“The real cedar shake had been deteriorating over time, but the hailstorm was the finishing blow,” says General Manager Jason Waters, PGA, at The Club at Wynstone. “We took the opportunity to consider our options. A number of resident members had replaced their roofs with the DaVinci Roofscapes product in recent years. They were pleased with their results. The composite roof was approved as an option for the Property Owners Association a few years back. As we decided which roofing product to choose for The Club, the low maintenance aspect, plus the product life duration are key factors that led us to invest in the DaVinci Select Shake roofing tiles.”

Reroofing at The Club isn’t as simple as committing to just one building. Certainly, the clubhouse needed a new roof. But, in addition, the pool and tennis buildings also required new roofs. As did the starters hut, range shed, halfway house and scoreboard. All of these buildings are located on the grounds of the highly acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Signature Design golf course.

“From an aesthetics perspective, we wanted a cohesive look,” says Waters. “That’s why we chose the Mountain blend color for the Select Shake tiles on all the structures. We’ve been very pleased that the new roofing has made all the structures look fresher. The clubhouse especially appears newer following the reroofing job.”

DaVinci Select Shake tiles are designed to imitate authentic cedar shake. The molds for Select Shake are taken from real wood profiles. This makes them perfect for projects where a traditional cedar look is desired. The product design of Select Shake allows for faster installation and will withstand whatever Mother Nature throws its way. The product has an ASTM E 108, Class A fire rating and UL 2218, Class 4 impact rating.

All DaVinci Roofscapes composite products are made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers, as well as a highly-specialized fire retardant. Select Shake composite tile is

available in 8-inch and 10-inch widths. The 10-inch pieces have a simulated keyway to give the look of 4-inch and 6-inch shakes to create a multi-width appearance. The tiles can be installed at 9-inch or 10-inch exposure.

Roofing it Right

The team that coordinated the entire reroofing project for The Club is Expert Roofing. They serve the metro Chicago and Milwaukee communities. Expert Roofing worked many months while operations at The Club continued.

“The work progressed well with Expert Roofing,” explains Waters. “There are details that needed to be incorporated into the project, like snow guards. These things take time and we wanted to do it right. It’s important to us that the roofing throughout The Club be low maintenance. We don’t want to worry about long-term maintenance issues in the future, so getting the work done properly up front was a key priority for all of us. We’re very pleased with the look and promised durability of the DaVinci product. Our community believes this is a smart investment that will serve us well in the future.”
